BP Land Sale Moves On To County

The city approved a recommendation to offer the county $1 to purchase the BP land at Janesville Road and Lannon Drive, understanding some risk is involved, but preferring to control what happens at a vital corner in downtown.

The Common Council gave its approval to move forward on a purchase of land at the corner of Janesville Road and Lannon Drive.

The site formerly held the BP gas station, and despite the understanding that some risk is involved in cleaning up the site, which is considered slightly contaminated, the council saw more benefit in controlling what happens next on the site.

Alderman Kert Harenda, who had requested more time to review an environmental study already done on the property, said he was concerned that no ground water information was available, but admitted he has seen other cities take the risk in acquiring properties like it.

Alderman Dan Soltysiak saw the purchase as a way to "spur economic development, as long as we can make a sale on it to cover our costs. This is one of those instances where we can create development when other private businesses may not want to spend the money to clean it up first."

The city will also be eligible to apply for a state grant to assist with the cost of clean up, at as much as 78 percent.

The county board will not likely take this issue up until its December meeting.

It's funny but the three categories you've all mentioned are doing well. Apparently having more than one of anything is OK. Personally, I still miss the Burger King, but I'd be OK with another similar chain.

STARBUCKS! and/or a Chipotle, Noodles type chain. I think keeping it slightly more upscale would be better than just having a generic fast food place.

My perception is that the lot itself is not big enough for much else that a fast food joint. Wendy's is rated #2 behind MacDonalds, maybe that would be a good fit. But the way our planning commision operates who ever builds there it will have to be all brick and glass and have "guard towers" built into it like all new bussinesses in Muskego do. Maybe a Harley dealer could be built there.

I vote for Panera. Where Panera goes, people follow.

I don't think you can have anything overly popular in that location. Creates too much gridlock. Never got gas their in 20 years when it was open cause it was so annoying to get in and out of. It's not a big enough lot IMO.
