Check and Mate: Muskego High School Team Takes Conference Title
Varsity team finishes its season with a perfect 8-0 record, with JV finishing a strong second.
Muskego High School completed the conference season last night with a victory over Kewaskum High School to advance its varsity record to a perfect 8-0 in conference matches and to win the conference. MHS' JV team went 6-2 to finish in 2nd place. Muskego's team consists of 10 MHS students, all Freshmen, and 4 students from Lake Denoon Middle School. This was MHS' first year in the conference and they are the youngest team.
Other teams in the conference include: New Berlin Eisenhower, Brookfield Academy, New Berlin West, Arrowhead, Fond du Lac St. Mary's, Hartland, Kewaskum and St. Johns Academy.
MHS Freshmen on the MHS Chess Team include regular players: Evan Seghers, Reid Seghers, Jason Markowski, Rachel Gomoll, Kolt Otterbacher, Chris Tillson, Brady Megal and Sam Miller, and subs: Mitchell Dentice
LDMS students on the MHS Team include regular players: Jorin McGuire and Jacob Gomoll, and subs: Jack Bognar and Will Schantz.
The Muskego High Chess Team is coached by Mark Seghers and Dan Gomoll, with expert assistance from Matt Schladweiler. "These kids have been playing together since 3rd grade, in the great program started by Greg Reese at Mill Valley," says Mark Seghers, "Over the years, while other schools have seen their kids leave chess for other activities, our kids friendships and the support of our parents, the schools, and the community has kept chess alive with these kids and within Muskego."
Muskego's chess players have won many scholastic events over the last 7 years, including a National championship, a State championship, a State runner-up, and many other first place trophies.
