Despite Added Election Duties, Clerks Feel no Pressure

Tuesday's recall election primary will be the first time local clerks will be asked to upload election results directly to the state. Some cities have expressed concern, but Muskego feels confident the change won't add much of a burden.

Tuesday's primary recall election will test the snafu at the Waukesha County clerk's office, when nti the following day. The clerk's office on election night had the appearance of a 'paper job' on someone's front lawn as election machine tapes were posted onto walls around the room for reporters to tally by hand.

The changes, approved by the state Government Accountability Board, require to the state system, a move that puts more responsibility on local election officials.

While some in the county have expressed the concern over so many more people being logged into the state's system at once, Muskego clerk's office election official Kim Chavie said they aren't anticipating any problems.

"We aren't really concerned over the new procedures, and we haven't added any staff because of it," she told Muskego Patch. "We have established a pretty solid system here already and this is just one additional piece to what we're already doing."

Previously, municipalities sent their votes to the Waukesha County Clerk's Office, which counted them and sent them to the state. Officials decided to change the process for the May 8 recall primary and the June 5 general recall election in the wake of the April's debacle.

County officials met last week with clerks to address any of their concerns about the election night changes. How smoothly the changes are implemented will be revealed after the polls close on Tuesday. All Muskego polling locations will be opened from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Absentee ballots can be cast with the clerks office until 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 4.
