Poll: People Don't Know What to Think About Wisconsin
42 percent of people surveyed in a Public Policy Polling poll gauging Americans' perceptions of the states said they aren't sure how they feel about the Dairy State.
Public Policy Polling recently released the results of its recent survey asking Americans their opinions on every state in the union.
California ranked dead last, with 44 percent of people surveyed saying they have an unfavorable opinion of the state. The Huffington Post noted that many Republicans surveyed said they "absolutely hate" California. Illinois, New Jersey, Mississippi and Utah round out the list of states with negative reviews.
Hawaii was the favorite state by a wide margin, with 54 percent saying they had a favorable opinion of the island paradise; 10 percent saw the state in a negative light. The top 10 also included Colorado, Tennessee, South Dakota, Virginia, Montana, Alaska, Oregon, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
Wisconsin's results are mixed. 40 percent had a favorable impression of the state and 17 percent an unfavorable impression. But the biggest category was those who said they weren't sure, coming in at 42 percent of people surveyed.
Maybe it's the political turmoil here, or our unassuming Midwestern natures, but let's take a moment to toot our own horns. What do you like about Wisconsin?
Upload a photograph of your favorite things about Wisconsin, and tell us about it in the caption or comments. I've gotten things started with a picture of Friday's snowfall. There's always something special about a the first snowfall that coats the trees.
Editor's Note: A previous version of this story credited this poll to the incorrect polling agency. We regret the mistake.

Not being from here, I can say that Wisconsin is absolutely beautiful and has a huge amount to offer. Its nature is absolutely gorgeous and Madison and Milwaukee are cities that have a lot to offer culturally. Having lived in various states though I must say, Wisconsin has been the toughest State to get to know people. I believe the reason for such is that Wisconsinites are not transient people, therefore have strong roots right here and their circle of friends and family are very tight, which makes it tough for a newcomer to break through. Now that being said, my daughters as they are young and go to school have had an easy time adopting and love this State and have amazing friends.

Thank you! I've lived here all my life and wouldn't live anywhere else! It truly is beautiful, especially the wonderful rolling hills, drumlins and other affects of the glacial era. Every Summer we have festivals and the State Fair and other family oriented activites to enjoy. One of our State's treasures is the American Players Theater in Spring Green. Each Summer actors from all around, including the Milwaukee Rep, gather to present several plays in an idyllic outdoor setting near other Wisconsin attractions such as the House on the Rock and Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin.
Right here in Greendale, you can walk down any street and no matter who you pass, people smile and say hello. I love Wisconsin.

@Sofia, welcome to Wisconsin. I can agree to disagree. I don't know how it is now but a few years ago there were many places in the south, where we were totally ignored. I was told it was because of our northern accent. Yankee vs Confederate. You can find the same thing within Wisconsin. Move from the city to a rural community and you may have a tough time fitting in.

@James: THANK YOU! But also to ALL, I do not mean to be critical in terms of the people. We DO have friends NOW, but it took quite a bit longer than other States we lived in the past. Perhaps as we lived in IA, I just assumed that it would be overly friendly as people are there, but again there are in general more transients there than here.
@Mau: I DO have to agree with you on the South. We lived in TN and there too was not the easiest, yet NC was AMAZINGLY friendly.

Being a transplanted southerner, I can honestly say that I'd never go back. I love it here in WI, even in winter. I know the most beautiful snowfalls are the hardest to clear away, but it's worth it to me. They can be so breathtaking. I love the woodlands and lakes and though the people aren't as friendly as down home, they are true adventure seekers and quite interesting. I'll just go hug a tree now - lol!

Interesting, you label the South stupid, but it's the #1 choice for Wisconsin union public employees to retire in. Many proudly call themselves Snowbirds.
You know Keith, my Father is retired from the State of Wisconsin, Racine area. He has many retired friends from the local area, also former State of Wisconsin employees. Do you know I have NEVER heard any of them call the South "stupid". In fact, they often like to brag about why they love living there. Here are some of the great reasons they give for moving South:
1. No Income Tax.
2. Low property tax.
3. A minimum of needed services, which keps costs low.
4. No whiny, demanding and overpaid union public employee to deal with.
You know Keith, I think you are just plain DUMB, and there are a whole bunch of retired State of Wisconsin employees who would agree with me.
IF the State of Wisconsin was smart, it would pass a law requiring that State of Wisconsin income tax be paid on State of Wisconsin pensions no matter where one chose to live after retirement. That would only be fair. Escaping Wisconsin after retirement shouldn't mean escaping paying your fair share. Hopefully our Legislators can correct this oversight.

The lake in early spring
Moist and pale, with a cautious hint of promise
Not unlike the ancient salt-scent that lured sailors to the ocean.
Winter's death wades heavily toward the shore
Aged seaweed, twisted branches, black mud, stones
Cleansed away after restless cold sleep
Just before the sparkling stretch to warmth and beauty.
Now the fog wafts in
Entrancing the sounds of running feet and spitting traffic
Sending caution from the harbor, solemn tone
Alerting all of softened lights and hissing highways.
The city is the cloud's wistful dream of dangerous enchantment.
Mist lingers until the tearful sky again obeys reflective water.
Wisps of fog, just beyond,
Numbs the reach of bone-chilled fingertips.

Nate, I assumed President Obama was including the U.S. federal district (Washington DC) and insular areas, which include Puerto Rico, Guam, Marianas Islands, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, and Baja Nuevo/Serranilla. Being from a non-contiguous state, and the most recent territory to become a state, he might have a slightly different view of states and territories than those of us in more established mainland states. That's what I supposed, anyway.
As far as thinking we're all hygiene products, when out-of-state people used to find out where I was from, they were happy and asked a lot of questions about our famous marshes, parks, lake, and other beauties. Now they get a wary look or tone (if on the phone) as if they are expecting me to explode or something.
Even Great Britain knows about Scott Walker's prank phone call from "David Koch." A relative who lives in that country asked me about it, and I also read about it in the Guardian. Sigh.

If 42% are unsure, it's probably got nothing to do with the "political turmoil" or our "unassuming Midwestern natures" (a euphemism for a bunch of country bumpkins), it's probably because they never really thought about it. If someone asked me about Idaho, for instance, I'd probably be solidly in the "weren't sure" category. I'm actually kind of surprised as many people actually had an opinion about WI as the survey indicates. I'm guessing that at least a portion of the positives were folks who probably really weren't sure but didn't want it to seem like they were as unfamiliar with as many states as actually was the case and who aren't negative types by nature.

Firearms can be legally shipped from one Federal Firearms License (FFL) holder to another ever since the law went into effect in the 1960's. Law abiding citizens send firearms this way all the time. They pay a fee for it. Jersey's anti-gun laws are still some of the worst in US.

I think a good way to pay back the money wasted on the recall would be for walker to somehow whatever it takes when he is reelected and he will be by a higher margin this time because non residents and dead people won't be voting this time a good thing would be to remove seniority rights because they are not condusive to productivity and sould be eliminated so the young eager workers can move forward and not be scolded and laid off because they want to work and are told to do less by the older seniority parasites on the system that produce less and less each year. Culling the herd of deadwood would do a wonderfull thing for the parasonic additude that is there because these parasites on the system seam to have more time invested in the perpetuating their corruption than doing there jobs. They have bankrupted the bussiness they work for and should be gratfull SCOTT WALKER at least saved your job for you you act like a bunch of 3 year olds with lumps in your drawers well he changed them for you ! seniority should go by the wayside it is not productive minded only protects the non producer

Wisconsin is a beautiful State with lots of Woods, Waters, and great Outdoor recreational activities. I don't care for Cities, so I stay out of Downtowns. Locally, the Root River is a great place to fish with lots of beautiful scenery and trails to hike or bike. Up North, being on a Lake is great. My favorite season is Summer, then Fall.
Wisconsin is great to visit and vacation in.
Business wise - Wisconsin must get rid of the public unions, cut property tax by at least 50%, or more, provide limited benefits to employees only, perhaps offer family coverage if the employee pays the full cost, and end defined pension plans. The Wisconsin Retirement System must be retired.
Business has already spoken - it is leaving and the landscape is littered with empty businesses, abandoned homes, decreasing property values, and increasing property taxes that fall on a smaller number of taxpayers every year. Owning taxable proprty in Wisconsin is a liability - I would never do so. Own a business? LOL. Not when the public employees have more CONTROL than the owner and the first cut goes to the State, or they take it from you.
Wisconsin - It's a great place to visit - but you don't want to live and work there - unless you're a current public employee. That WILL change in the future - as Wisconsin collapses further - unless it takes the steps I provided above.
