UPDATE: Snow Won't Slow Walker Rally — and Neither Will Any Protesters

Organizers have rented most of Hart Park and will barricade and exclude hecklers.

Organizers of the Celebrate Walker rally set for Saturday in Wauwatosa's Hart Park have taken steps to ensure that the event will not turn into a shouting match with opponents.

Co-coordinator Meghan Duffey said Wednesday that the grass-roots groups putting on the rally have taken out a permit and rented much of Hart Park for the day, and that barrier fences will be in place around the entire rally site, between North 68th and North 70th streets.

While the general public is invited and there is no admission charged, that gives Celebrate Walker the effect of being legally a private event, allowing organizers to exclude or expel anyone openly opposing their cause.

"We've rented out almost the entire park, and it will be barricaded," Duffey said. "If there are any issues (with protesters), we would ask them very nicely to leave."

"That doesn't mean you can't come in, as long as you're respectful and there to listen," she said. "I would put up with buttons. I won't have people waving signs."

UPDATE: Protesters are expected at Saturday's rally, but pro-Walker organizers have taken even more steps to keep them at bay. See related story, "Anti-Walker Protesters Are Planning to Show at Hart Park."

Duffey said group leaders met Wednesday morning with Wauwatosa police and clarified the ground rules.

"If anyone caused trouble or refused to leave, they would be trespassing," Duffey said. "We can ask the police to escort them out."

Wauwatosa Police Lt. James Mastrocola confirmed that was the case. As for anyone protesting outside the fences, he said, their rights would be respected as well, as long as they weren't breaking any laws.

"We're not working for the pro-Walker people or the anti-Walker people," he said. "We're just there to keep the peace."

Mastrocola said that given the distance of the Rotary Pavilion, where the rally is centered, from public ways, it would be difficult for any disturbance outside the fences to be heard.

"Whether by accident or intention," he said, "I think (rally organizers) picked the perfect spot."

Duffey said that besides a police presence, there will be private 20 security specialists inside the fences for people to turn to.

"They will be our 'go-to' people should there be any concerns," she said. "They will be wearing yellow vests."

Snow to be cleared, shuttle buses will run

Duffey also said that snow — some 5 to 7 inches is predicted to fall Friday — and parking should not be worries for anyone wanting to attend.

"The snow we have on the ground and any more snow we get, that will all be cleared," she said. "So definitely, come."

The organizers have also rented two shuttle buses that will run between the Park and Ride lot on Watertown Plank Road just west of Highway 45 and Hart Park, and attendees are encouraged to use them.

"We don't want to intrude on the people of Wauwatosa," she said. "We don't want to congest the streets with traffic and parked cars."

The shuttles will run from noon to 2 p.m. to bring people to the event, and again from 4 to 6 p.m. to get them back to their cars, Duffey said.

The organizers will have an on-the-ground security review with Tosa police at 10 a.m. Saturday, Duffey said. Plans are laid to handle a crowd of at least 1,000.

"We're very confident now of getting 1,000 or more," she said.

Duffey said the security measures being taken are precautionary but she really expects no trouble.

"This is a celebration of Gov. Walker, period," she said. "It's going to be very positive."

Duffey said there would baked goods, coffee, hot cider and hot chocolate, all for the price of a donation.

"We have 30 women baking for us, fresh-baked goods. It's kind of like a family affair. We really want to boost Wauwatosa."

Cannot wait to hear the left and the media try to spin this event as some sort of hateful, angry Tea Party orgy. Ugh! Still waiting for someone to identify any person, group or entity — other than the public employee unions — who/which has been significantly adversely affected by the elimination of collective bargaining. So all you can do is expect protests? what a way to think? do you expect to get in a car accident when you go out and drive to the store?

I would not want to live a life I have to worry about what the next bad thing that will happen.

If you want to promote someone who has repeatedly lied to you and the rest of the state then fine. Go let him spread more lies to you.

When you hear him say , "stand with me", "fight for american" hopefully for 1 second you will realize he is saying ANYTHING to make you believe in his corrupt agenda.

OH, why not ask him why he was in New York and Texas at $1000 a plate dinners collecting money/brides from millionaires to continue screwing you and me?

If everyplace I went people were booing and yelling at me I would have to think I was doing something wrong.

however, "your buddy" mr. walker keeps on with his pace to not respect and listen to everyone in this state.

have fun at your rally as it will be one of this LAST!

"We don't want to intrude on the people of Wauwatosa," she said. "We don't want to congest the streets with traffic and parked cars."

Funny how this attitude is in direct contrast with the anti-Walker, occupy, and 99% crowd that quite literally go out of their way to inconvenience others. These groups have all demonstrated at one time or another a fundamental lack of respect for others rights.

Meanwhile, the 'TeaParty' and pro-Walker mass gatherings have always made respecting others rights a top priority.

Isn't this alone a clear indication of what side is more fundamentally right? I sure think so!

@The Hoffa, I agree. It's funny how they vehemently uphold the right to free speech, yet do all they can to take those rights away from others. Good Grief! I wonder what they are so afraid of? There is no need for them to be anywhere near this gathering. Hmmm.... Maybe they're afraid the weak minded among them may hear too much of the truth and be pulled to the other side :)

So they are having the event in a public place but it's "legally a private event," complete with barricades. I understand Scott Walker needs to be able to uplink video of happy supportive crowds, but then he shouldn't do it in a public place. I also understand that after the warm welcome he received from Occupy Chicago this fall at a speaking engagement, the last thing he wants is another human microphone experience reminding him of his lies and misrepresentations.

This whole thing is nuts. A guy who's getting most of his cash from out-of-state complaining about the recall getting out-of-state contributions. And so afraid of his constituents that he has to put up barricades. Should be a party!

Maybe if your side could be relied upon to act as something other than uncaged savages every time the right wants to get together somewhere, they wouldn't have to put up barricades. Learn to act like civilized human beings and perhaps you'll be treated as such.

And you truly think that opponents of Walker's policies would keep quiet and play nice at this event? If he is so wrong, why not let him hang himself — politically speaking — with his own words? But this cannot happen if he and his supporters are not given the chance to speak and be heard. Shouting "Shame! Shame! Shame!" contributes zero toward facing our State's very real problems.

@Bren -

First off, this event was not planned by Walker, but rather his supporters, in a true grass roots fashion. Unlike your side's claimed 'grass roots' actions that almost always feature millions of public sector union dollars and coordination.

Second, they secured the permits to use the public space for a private event, just as anyone else can, so what exactly is so wrong with this?

Third, as you must not have checked the itinerary included in the article, Walker is not even scheduled to attend, yet alone speak, so what would the "welcome he received from Occupy Chicago" have to do with anything?

Fourth, according to you it's apparently OK for your side to complain about out-of-state cash coming into Walker's coffers, but not OK for Walker's side to complain about out-of-state cash coming into the recall coffers. How is this not hypocrisy to the extreme? And yet, you still claim to be an independent - please, you are nothing but a joke!

And finally, please explain to us why people of your ilk would want to attend this event except to try and disrupt it. Why can't these people celebrate their support of Walker and his reforms without constant attempted and actual interference from your side? As an 'independent,' you must realize that they have this right, but for some reason you only ever choose to acknowledge the rights of the anti-Walker recall crowd.

Quit fooling yourself and trying to fool us Bren - you are NOT an independent!

Well, you know, James it is kind of an irresistible event for them. Look at the list of the names of the attendees. You can almost envision the steam pouring out of some lefty's ears as they hiss out one name after another. It's like everyone they hate (sans the big target) all at one place.

Frankly, now that I think about it, I'm not sure barricades are going to be enough. If one or more of them lost their minds in the frenzy and went off tonight, I wouldn't be all that surprised.

Comment_arrow

Bren

4:33 pm on Thursday, January 19, 2012

Bob, you have no basis for calling "my side" (which as a placeholder name we'll call "justice") any names-the Capitol police thanked the protesters for their civility several times. My experiences at Patch indicate that the majority of blustering and name calling comes from "your side" (which as a placeholder we'll call "confused") -- for example, reference your own comment and young Mr. Hoffa's lower in this thread.

Markman, democracy is all about letting everyone's voice be heard. Sometimes there are disagreements (welcome to Patch). Isolation isn't going to make the disagreements go away, is it. That they feel they must barricade themselves in at all is telling. And all I can say about "Shame" is, why are people shouting "Shame?" The chastisement itself may not address our state's problems, but the recall is.

Young Mr. Hoffa, yes, I should have said, "Walker's supporters." Because again, the last thing they'll want is to be surrounded and outshouted by recall supporters. I'm not saying it's wrong to be in a park, but I have an issue with trying to keep people out when public officials are on the agenda.

Concerning out-of-state funds, the real issue is the impact of Citizens United. If you saw the most recent Republican debate this issue was discussed. It's becoming clear to all that the free, unregulated flow of dollars into politics is a dangerous road. And it's hypocritical to complain about opponents' out-of-state $ when your campaign gets it too.

So, according to Bren, public officials shouldn't be allowed to take part in private events that are only open to select people? REALLY??? Then why couldn't I get in to any of the $10k a plate Obama fundraisers? After all, he's a public official.

Likewise, I guess you also believe that public official's private homes should be fully open and accessible to the public whenever the public official is there, right?

Also, where is your criticism of the right-leaning news reporter getting kicked out of a private recall event that was attended by public Democrat officials?

Come on Bren, admit that this is a completely stupid standard that you've come up with here, as any true 'independent' would.

Ok, I admit first I am one of a few independent voters who is actually sick and tired of ALL politicians and seeing neighbor against neighbor over our political differences. The first question I ask myself is, what has any politician done to improve the quality of my life the last 10 years...nothing. We have supported a war that was fraud, we support programs where there is considerable fraud (child day care) but as the middle class taxpayer, I get nothing in return for my dollar paid in taxes and as a small business owner this state does nothing at all to help me survive. So who do I support....no one. I want term limits on all politicians, I want outside money on both parties to stop because that is what is running this country now is big money, not the American citizens. AIG owes $118 billion back to us, pay us before politicians get a handout.

Wake up people. We all have a right to either protest or rally and it should be celebrated that we have the right to do this because the way things are going now, all our rights as a middle class citizen is soon to perish just like this great country, it is almost beyond repair. The arab spring has sprung and when does it stop, when there is bloodshed over such foolishness. Rid all politicians and time to start over.

I agree, Walker has failed miserably in the area of job creation and was elected because he ran on this platform. As a small business owner the state gives me nothing at all, nada, to help my business grow so I can hire more people. He created this mess and had 1 million signatures because he choose not to listen to the people and cram his agenda down the throats of others. It is not about whining or being a baby, it is about people having their voices not heard anymore and the democaratic process is working now.

Obamocare failed but Walker continues to turn down federal money needed for childhood immunizations, diagnostic procedures that detect illness and lifesaving medications. He did again today. When does the foolishness stop? He does this to spite obama instead of realizing the needs of the people.

I voted for GW1 and he failed. I voted for Clinotn and felt he did a decent job. GW2 failed and led us to a war that was fraud so his buddies in big business could get rich. I voted for Obama and he has failed. I am no longer voting for a Democrat or Republican because all they do is fight, point fingers and take money from big companies to fatten their own wallets.

Maybe we should start a new political party that maybe stands up for the American citizen and is honest. Show me that candidate and they get my vote. I did vote for Walker but did sign the recall because he also has failed miserably.
