Think Pink: Breast Cancer Awareness Events in Southeast Wisconsin

From galas to walks to shopping, here's how you can participate, pledge support and donate to the cause in Southeast Wisconsin.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and whether you love to shop, attend events, walk or run, there are tons of different ways to support the cause. Check out the list below of opportunities to go pink in Southeast Wisconsin and beyond:

There are even more ways to spread breast cancer awareness this month by supporting national organizations that are fighting for a cure.

Research centers like Susan G. Komen for the Cure are selling pink ribbon merchandise and it’s a twofer — retail therapy and donating to a cause that affects millions.

You can also support breast cancer research by affixing a special stamp to your mail. The U.S. Postal Service has been selling a stamp commemorating breast cancer awareness for the past 15 years. The agency has raised $75 million so far for research programs at the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

The American Cancer Society’s annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk is organized nationwide and so far more than 8 million people have walked for this cause and raised about $460 million.

And you can join people from four continents in a Race for the Cure event organized by Susan G. Komen For The Cure, or an Avon Walk For Breast Cancer event organized by the Avon Foundation for Women.

TELL US: Is there a special event you participate in to support breast cancer research? Share your stories and thoughts with us by adding them to the comments sections of this article. Also, be sure to add photos of you and your friends supporting the cause to the photo gallery above.

The fight against breast cancer is an admirable one. But could you please highlight the organizations and events other than Susan G. Komen, for people who want every dollar of their donation to count?

Randy1949 - could not agree more - Am alarmed to have heard that a lot of the money Susan G Komen receives goes to fight lawsuits against other organizations that use the word cure.

Komen's executive staff is also highly compensated. I was surprised to learn how much Nancy Brinker makes per year, and what her expense account is. Meanwhile, normal people are donating their time and paying extra for products with pink ribbons.

Komen made a huge mistake in shining the light on themselves last December.

I'd rather support actual breast cancer research myself, or programs that provide health services for low income/working women.

So I think I'll take a pass on the Komen Foundation and support the American Cancer Society instead.

Get a pink hair extension to support Breast Cancer Awareness at Off Broadway Salon in the Sendik's Towne Center on Capital Dr. during the month of October. My girls and I did them last year and it's a fun way to show support. Off Broadway donates the proceeds to breast cancer foundations.

Dawn, you wrote a very nice recommendation on my mothers Facebook page (LACI Boutique) last year. On the 9th we are having a ladies night private party and since it is breast cancer awareness month we are having a dr there showing all the ladies how to do self exams. However we are thinking about donating some of the profits to a foundation. Can you give any suggestions? Since we are not even a year old we are not sure how much it will be but I know every little bit helps. Please email us at laciboutique@yahoo.com. Thanks so much for your comment too!!
