As a fundraiser and communications professional for a Wisconsin charity, I hear the words "I wish there was something I could do to help" a lot. Or, at least, a variation of those words. Some people don't want to simply write a check; some don't know who to write the check out to; some would rather attend a fun event that supports charity than simply hand over a donation. The good news is that you can help!
First, let me tell you a little about the charity, Adoption Resources of Wisconsin (ARW). ARW is a Milwaukee-based nonprofit organization that serves the entire state of Wisconsin's children and families. ARW is an umbrella over foster care and adoption in Wisconsin, supporting strong, stable families that raise healthy, productive children. Or, as one Wisconsin parent said, "ARW is a safe haven for my family and children." Through its various programs, ARW provides information and resources, responds to inquiries, shares information, educates and trains families and professionals throughout the state - and sometimes even across state borders!
Next, let me tell you about my connection to ARW. When I was finishing up my studies at Carroll University, I signed on at what was then the Special Needs Adoption Network to do an internship. I thoroughly enjoyed my time and loved the mission and work of the organization so, when the opportunity presented itself only months after I graduated, I jumped at the chance to join the staff. I've been on staff at ARW for over 12 years now, always working on our communicatinos and development team. It's rewarding and very fulfilling work that challenges me and in which I am very invested. Over those 12 years, I've talked loads of folks into giving their support to ARW -- including many (if not all!) of my family members and friends. I truly appreciate all of that support; not just for my benefit, but because ARW is a charity with a lot of integrity and committment to making a strong, positive difference in the lives of children and families in Wisconsin.
Finally, let me tell you about a few events that are coming up that I hope will interest you.
- In August, we are hosting our Fourth Annual Homes Fore Kids Golf Outing. This event started through the enormous generosity of a benefactor we have come to call our "Angel." Four years ago, this angel called ARW's Director of Development and told her that he was going to fully fund a golf outing to benefit ARW. Well, what could we say but yes? Four years later, it's become a much-looked-forward-to event. So, once again, we'll be heading out to the prestigious Bull at Pinehurst Farms course on August 23. You can be involved by golfing the beautiful (and challenging!) course, or by becoming a sponsor (there are lots of opportunities left available!). We are also looking for some items to include in the raffle, so if you're a business owner who'd like to make a donation, that would be much appreciated, as well.
- In November, we are hosting our 17th Annual Adoption Celebration, The Journey Home. This event is a wonderful night filled with food, friend-raising and auctions. It's a great opportunity to learn more about ARW and the impact of our work, as well as meet and mingle with other supporters - not to mention the fabulous items we collect all through the year to be included in both silent and live auctions. This event is on November 15 and we'll be at the Harley-Davidson Museum's Garage this year. You can support the event by attending, by providing a sponsorship or by making a donation of an item (or items!) for the auctions. It's a great opportunity for local businesses to not only show their support for an area charity, but also to get word out about their services and themselves.
Interested? Just click on any of those links above - you can register for either event, submit a sponsorship donation or even an auction item donation right on the website. Or, if you more of a face-to-face person, you can call, email or drop by and chat with me -- or tell me that you'd like a visit and I'll come to you! ARW loves our donors and we are always looking to make new friends - we'd love to meet you!
Oh, and you can find out more about ARW by visiting our websites - we have a whole family of them, all linked together for your easy navigation. Start out here: www.adoptionresourcesofwi.org. And you can also find us on Facebook and Twitter!
