Newcastle Place completes 1,449.6 miles of cardiovascular activity as part of nationwide challenge for seniors

Residents join national effort to surpass 1,310 miles of cardiovascular activity

Mequon, WI – Residents of Newcastle Place, a senior living community in Mequon, recently participated in a nationwide challenge to surpass 1,310 miles of cardiovascular exercise. Fifty Newcastle Place residents achieved a total of 1,449.6 miles during the four-week period. The community was one of 57 Life Care Services and CRSA senior living communities throughout the United States to participate in the challenge.

The challenge, Project 1310, was inspired by Elizabeth Proffitt, the marketing and sales director at a community managed by Life Care Services in Reading, Pa. After the untimely death of her husband in 2005, Proffitt sought a way to overcome her grief. With the help of a friend and the support of her employer, she made it her goal to complete 50 marathons in all 50 states before the age of 50. She completed her quest in the fall of 2013 at the age of 49. Project 1310 is named in recognition of the 1,310 miles Proffitt ran in her 50 marathons.

Project 1310 guidelines allowed participants to log their 1,310 miles by walking, running, swimming or performing other cardiovascular exercise. Residents recorded their mileage using pedometers or other measuring devices. A special Intranet site was created containing helpful Project 1310 information, including motivational videos recorded by Proffitt, a performance-tracking database and a display of system-wide results.

“Project 1310 reflects the strong culture of wellness and fitness at LCS, where we promote Eight Dimensions of Wellness,” said Liz Bush, Sr. Vice President/Director of Senior Housing Marketing and Sales for LCS.

Part of the HealthyLife™ Services program, the eight dimensions of wellness are identified as intellectual, physical, emotional, social, spiritual, environmental, vocational and health services.

“Through Project 1310, thousands of seniors have reaped the physical, emotional, cognitive and social benefits that exercise can provide,” Bush added. “The program certainly built a sense of competition and camaraderie in the 58 participating communities.”
