Healthy People, Healthy Pets

Dr. Jodie explains how human and pet health issues are similar and challenges you to address your health this New Year for the sake of your pet!

I can't tell you how many times a discussion in my office about pet health leads to a client saying," if I do all this, my pets will be eating better than me, my pet will be healthier than me." Sad but true.

The average American is really out of shape, and it's NOT all about exercise nor less food. Just as for our pets, it's about eating the right combination of foods. The food pyramid which we have had "ingrained" (pardon the pun) into our heads, has had it all wrong for years. The pushing of low fat, high carb has coincided with the development of "wheat belly" and worse an increase in disorders such as Celiac, Crohn's and heart disease. It is carbohydrate consumption which exacerbates carbohydrate cravings. Cut out the white stuff! An excess of sugar(candy), starch(pasta, bread, crackers, chip) is stored in your body as triglycerides! Ever heard a doctor tell you to lower those? And, by the way, when you skip meals/fast, our primal bodies perceive THAT as a stressor. Thus the next meal is "stored" to be on the "safe side", to prevent perceived starvation. Thus, the high carb meals are continually stored. Guess what hormone facilitates this storage? Insulin!

Excess insulin overwhelms receptor sites, called down regulation. Another phrase for this is insulin resistance. Insulin becomes ineffective and whala...diabetes. Yes, our pets get diabetes too. And guess what? If we change dry kibble eating diabetic cats over to all raw, wet, meat-based, high protein, zero-carb food, their diabetes goes away! And dogs who make this change will have a greatly decreased insulin need. Did you know that in humans a decreased need for insulin is associated with longevity of life?

Thus, a high protein/moderate fat diet is healthier than a high carbohydrate diet.

When you have a carb craving, eat a protein item, a fat and a vegetable, NOT a carb. For example, eggs, butter, avocado. This will produce more satiety and your body will then start burning it's existing fat stores. This will unclog your liver of excess stored fat so it can do it's job of detoxification of all the other impurities that you put into your body or are exposed to in your environment.
