Do You Believe in Haunchies?

The legend of Haunchyville is as much a part of Muskego history as Pioneer Drive, Muskego Beach, Luther Parker Cemetery or DandiLion Park.

The legend of Haunchyville is as much a part of Muskego history as Pioneer Drive, Muskego Beach, Luther Parker Cemetery or DandiLion Park. The story seems to be passed down from one generation to another and is especially fascinating to teenagers who are known to go in search of the Haunchies every Halloween.

Folklore says that Haunchies are a band of little people (or elfs, dwarfs, goblins or midgets, depending upon who is telling the story) who came to Muskego after their days in the circus were over. They are said to live in a tiny village in the woods or a cornfield on Mystic Drive and do not like to be bothered. Supposedly, they are guarded by an old man with a shot gun and are also armed with baseball bats. If they catch you, they will cut you off at the knees so you will be just as short as they are. Many have tried to capture or photograph a Haunchy but so far the evidence is as elusive as Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.

One thing is certain, if you do go in search of Haunchyville, you might want to bring a little extra cash or your credit card with you. According to the local police department, trespassers on Mystic Drive not only need to fear the Haunchies but the cost of paying a fine too. So be careful out there all you curious Haunchy hunters. Happy Halloween!

Thankyouthankyouthankyou Laura - I swear this is the weirdest story in this city. What I'd like to know is if THIS is why Mystic Drive is called Mystic Drive, and where on earth the name 'haunchy' came from. Do other readers have strange tales to tell about this or other local lore?

We use to go to Haunchyville when I was in High School. A bunch of little tiny houses with no driveways. Lots of weird stories came out of there. In the late 80's early 90s they tore down all the houses. I had the chance to go in one of the houses before it got torn down... it was very tiny! Fun, spooky memories from high school in the 80s. :)

i have a feeling those tiny houses might have been hunters cabins. (but you never know!)

Silly Laura... those tiny houses belonged to the tiny people! ;-) So sad they are all gone.

How many of you out there remember the Mystic Drive Monster? He was reportedly very tall and covered with hair like Bigfoot.

I went there as a teenager and I can tell you the only person we incountered was a very mad, tall, huge resident. He had a 2 by 4 and wasn't about to let us leave until the police came. we all got warnings

Yes, Muskego has great businesses! We also have a great Executive Director -- Tina Weiss -- who weRead More can thank for much of the Chamber's growth, as well as our own.
