Marcus Theatres Movie Biz Blog: Will a Little Guy Named Turbo Turn a Whole New Generation Onto IndyCar Racing?

Turbo, the highly anticipated 3-D animated comedy from DreamWorks about a snail with dreams of big time racing, opens nationwide on Wednesday, July 17.

The premise of the movie is simple, albeit one that requires some suspension of disbelief.  The hero is an underdog snail named Theo who is obsessed with IndyCar racing.  When out traveling one day he ends up being sucked into the engine of a supercharged Camaro and emerges with the power of super-speed and a new persona – Turbo.  He is discovered by a snail-racing, taco stand owner and takes up with a rag-tag crew of fellow racing snails.  Turbo shares action and adventure with his racing buddies, helping them chase their dreams before focusing on achieving his own – winning the Indy 500. Turbo features the voice talents of Samuel L. Jackson, Maya Rudolph, Snoop Dogg, Paul Giamatti and Bill Hader.

Kids will adore this funny and heartwarming movie but so will IndyCar fans of any age.  Director David Soren clearly loves IndyCar racing and wants his audience to share his passion. The race scenes are beautifully rendered, with amazing perspective and dazzling energy.  The vice president of marketing for IndyCar served as a consultant on the film, ensuring that the IndyCar brand and the way the cars were being presented were accurate.

Introducing little ones to this sport through the movie – and its themes of passion, perseverance and reaching for the stars – is sure to seed the love of speed with a whole new generation of fans.

Marcus Theatres is celebrating the premier of Turbo with a free parking lot event showcasing IndyCars and their drivers. Bring the kids to see a real IndyFest show car and meet drivers Takuma Soto and Sarah Fisher.  Soto is an international racing superstar who joined IndyCar in 2010.  He won two poles and finished in the top-10 13 times before joining A. J. Foyt Racing for the 2013 season.  Fisher is the youngest woman ever to qualify for the Indianapolis 500.  She is the founder of Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing; her team scored its first IZOD IndyCar victory in 2011 at Kentucky Speedway.

Kasey Coler, the vice president of marketing for IndyCar and the brand consultant on the film, will also be present to talk about his behind the scenes experiences working on Turbo.
