New Muskego Police K9 Named After 9/11 Hero

The new canine is named Sirius, after the only dog killed in the World Trade Center collapse.

The name of the new Muskego police canine honors the only dog killed in the World Trade Center attacks.

"Sirius" was the winner of a police department contest to name the new dog, which drew huge community support when it was proposed over the summer.

Resident Donald Koehler submitted the name after reading about a police canine named Sirius, a Yellow Labrador retriever assigned to the Port Authority Police Department who was killed when the south tower collapsed, according to the Muskego Police Department newsletter.

Muskego's dog is at training this week. The department added a canine to the force to more easily track fleeing suspects, search suspicious vehicles and protect officers.

The city is hoping to solicit enough donations to cover the cost of a canine program.
