Daily Recall Election Roundup: May 31

Here are the latest updates from the campaign trail in the Wisconsin gubernatorial recall election.

Every day between now and Tuesday's gubernatorial recall election, Patch will provide daily updates on what's happening on the campaign trail.

Check back with this column throughout the day for the latest recall-related news.

12:30 p.m.: Former President Clinton to Appear on Friday to stump for Barrett

Former President Bill Clinton will be appearing in Milwaukee on Friday in support of  Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's efforts to defeat Gov. Scott Walker in next week's recall race.

The time and location of the former Democratic president's visit have not yet been determined. Former U.S. Rep. Dave Obey, a strong Barrett ally, had been urging Clinton to come to Milwaukee.

"I'm proud that President Clinton is adding his voice to this important fight," said Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who visited the state earlier this week.

11:20 a.m.: Barrett running ads questioning Walker's honesty

According to WisPolitics.com, Tom Barrett is now running two new TV ads that question Scott Walker’s honesty, countering Walker's own ad questioning Barretts truthfulness.

The first asks, “Do you believe Scott Walker?”

It shows video of Walker saying, “Our reforms are working” before the narrator asks, “What about the middle class?”

The ad repeats Barrett's claim that Walker “waged a civil war,” Wisconsin lost more jobs than any other state, Walker raised taxes on seniors, he cut education the most in state history and increased fees for college “all while giving billions in tax breaks to corporations and the super rich.”

The second ad knocks Walker on the John Doe investigation, showing video of Walker saying, “I’m a straight shooter” before the narrator says Walker has spent over $200,000 on criminal defense lawyers and admits his lawyers have been given all of his emails “but won’t show them to us.”

11:00 a.m.: Ron Johnson to meet with Walker supporters in Waukesha

The Republican Party of Waukesha County announced on its Facebook page that Senator Ron Johnson will visit their campaign headquarters at 1701 Pearl St, Waukesha, on Friday, June 1. Johnson will be available to meet with Walker supporters and volunteers at the "Victory Center" at 1:15 pm.

10:20 a.m.: New Walker Ad Released claims Barrett "struggles with the truth"

The Friends of Scott Walker campaign released a new ad today titled “Truthful,” which raises questions on the misreporting of violent crime in Milwaukee during Mayor Tom Barrett’s tenure.

“Mayor Barrett owes the people of Wisconsin an explanation as to why hundreds of violent crimes were misreported to FBI,” said Walker campaign spokeswoman Ciara Matthews. “Because Tom Barrett has failed to come clean about how such egregious misreporting could have happened, voters still don’t know if the mayor was involved in an intentional cover-up for the purpose of political gain. This is the kind of failed leadership that Wisconsin cannot afford.”

10:15 a.m.: Governor's Association Chairman to meet with Barrett supporters

Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, who is the chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, will meet with volunteers and supporters of Tom Barrett at an event in Madison today at 4:30 p.m. Gov. O’Malley will speak with volunteers about the unprecedented Democratic get-out-the-vote effort to elect Tom Barrett at the Madison Recall Field Office, 210 N. Bassett St. Madison.

The Republican Party of Wisconsin responded to the announcement shortly after. Communications Director Ben Sparks released the following statement:

"It's absolutely fitting that DGA Chairman Martin O'Malley is bringing his tax and spend stump speech to Wisconsin to campaign for Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett today. Like Tom Barrett, Governor O'Malley is unlikely to mention his failed record of taxing and spending, including when Maryland had the largest mass exodus of any state in the region during 2007-2010. With his shameful record of increased spending and tax hikes on his constituents, Martin O'Malley is a fitting surrogate for Tom Barrett's failed record in Milwaukee."

9:10 a.m.: Second debate set for tonight

Marquette University Law School will co-sponsor and host the second and final debate between Republican Gov. Scott Walker and Democratic Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett at 9 p.m. today.

The event will be broadcast statewide at 9 p.m. as part of WISN-TV's "Commitment 2012" coverage of the recall election. The moderator for the evening is Mike Gousha, distinguished fellow in law and public policy at Marquette Law School and host of Channel 12's "Upfront" program.

The debate also will be broadcast live on WUWM-FM (89.7) and the video will be streamed live on WisPolitics.com.

9 a.m.: Patch updates recall contribution database

Patch has just updated its to Walker and Barrett to include information filed with the state this week.

The database of nearly 200,000 contributions can be searched by name, city, state and ZIP code, and includes all individual donations made through May 21, the most recent data available.

9 a.m.: Barrett to campaign in Waukesha

Barrett will meet with voters and supporters at Waukesha restaurant at noon today. Barrett will make a stop at the Sprizzo Gallery Cafe, 363 W Main St.

Walker has no public appearances scheduled until tonight's debate.

►Barrett running ads questioning Walker's honesty◄
Has Barrett admitted his lies with the job numbers yet? You would expect someone that wants to question "honesty" to really be honest themselves. Right? ALEC/Koch #walkerkillsbabies #WIUNIONSnow #socialism4evr

Barrett was asked yesterday by a reporter if he could name some of the School districts that have been devastated by act 10 as the ads say. His response was well I can tell you that the prison gaurds fear for their safety? Reporters response was okay but can you tell the school districts that have been affected. Barretts response well we can certainly do an analysis and get back to you.
So with all the attack ads that have been running for the last year and with the latest ads saying how education has been gutted, how school districts have been devastated with larger class sizes, programs cut ect one would think that the lefts choice for Gov would be able to answer a very simple question? Considering those are the things he seems to be campaigning on? Could it be because its all rhetoric and mud slinging. No truth to the matter at all!!!

The Barrett campaign is despicable! He obviously feels that his voters are low information, un-thinking, and just downright stupid. Does Barrett honestly think that people haven't heard about the federal government calling out his LIES by confirming the Walker jobs numbers as correct?
Seeing as how that is Barrett's ad and he controls it, he should pull it on principle because of the LIE it spews about the jobs numbers. If Barrett had any class, character, or integrity at all, he'd pull it. But he hasn't yet, has he? I do believe that Tom Barrett has shown his true colors here. Barrett and the Wisconsin Dems are preying upon the low-information, un-thinking voter! If you support Barrett, how can this reality honestly not upset you, as Barrett thinks you're an idiot! Come on Tom - start playing fair or just give it up already!

NOT BEING THE LEAD AT THIS POINT, BARRETT THUS HAS NOTHING TO LOSE AT THIS POINT BY GOING ON THE ATTACK AND MAKING "WILD-EYED" CLAIMS AGAINST WALKER. BARRETT, IN TRUE "OBAMA LIKE" DEMOCRATIC FORMAT HAS NO REGARD FOR THE TRUTH AND HAS SPENT HIS TIME ATTACKING WALKER SHOVELING LOADS OF SEWAGE JUST TRYING TO MAKE SOMETHING "STICK TO THE WALL". GOD BLESS MR. WALKER, STICK TO THE FACTS, STAY ON COURSE AND STAND UP TO UNION BOSS TOM "OBAMA JR." BARRETT. UNION CONTROLS INFRINGE ON CITIZENS' FREEDOMS.....OH BUT I GUESS THAT'S OK JUST AS LONG AS POLITICIANS STAY IN POWER AND CAN RETURN FAVORS TO THEIR CRONIES WITH OUR HARD EARNED TAX DOLLARS. NEXT WE NEED TO GO AFTER THE LAWYERS (WHO ALSO HAVE NO REGARD FOR THE TRUTH!).
