Reaction Rolls in on Walker Recall Win

Why the recall results ended up in Scott Walker's favor depended on which side of the aisle you stood on.

As the evening - and the recall efforts that have held the state's attention for nearly a year and a half - came to a close, various groups offered their opinions on why the results fell so heavily in Scott Walker's favor. And as usual, they fell along party lines.

State Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate told WisPolitics that despite his party's loss, they had no regrets over the recall effort, and chalked it up in part to funding of each campaign.

“They have millionaires and billionaires that can write checks and take out TV ads,” Tate said. “This should not have even been a contest considering how much they spent.

Rob Zerban, who is running against Republican Congressman Paul Ryan, was a bit more blunt.

“Today we saw the buying of an election by out-of-state interest groups, propping up a corrupt Governor who seeks to only do the bidding of the extreme right-wing," Zerban said in a release.

“While Governor Walker and his Tea Party band may have been successful today, the entire recall process brought together people from every corner of Wisconsin who truly love this state and were willing to stand in the cold of a Wisconsin winter to fight for their state. They were not defeated for lack of will or lack of purpose; Scott Walker won because his network of shady partners flooded our state with lies about the hard-working people of our state.

However, the conservative Americans for Prosperity issued their own statement, citing the policies of the Governor as key in garnering a victory.

“Scott Walker’s name was on the ballot tonight but it was his policies that were decided on. We started our efforts last year to educate the people of Wisconsin on what the budget reforms mean for them. We showed them what is possible when a state turns a $3.6 billion deficit into a $154.5 million surplus, when $1 billion is saved at the state and local levels and when property taxes are reduced for the first time in 12 years," stated Wisconsin State Director Luke Hilgemann.

An official release from the Walker campaign cited the taxpayer's interests as being on the ballot, giving the governor an unprecedented recall victory.

“This is such a tremendous victory for Wisconsin taxpayers,” said Ciara Matthews, Walker campaign communications director. “Today, Wisconsin voters have told the nation they stand with Governor Walker because he stands with them.”

The Wisconsin Obama-Biden campaign also weighed in with their own assessment of the results.

"While tonight’s outcome was not what we had hoped for – no one can dispute the strong message sent to Governor Walker.  Hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites from all walks of life took a stand against the politics of division and against the flood of secret and corporate money spent on behalf of Scott Walker, which amounted to a massive spending gap of more than $31 million to $4 million," said Tripp Wellde, state director for the campaign.

"It is a testament to all of those individuals who talked to their friends, neighbors, and colleagues about the stakes in this election of how close this contest was.  The power of Wisconsin’s progressive, grassroots tradition was clearly on display throughout the run up to this election and we will continue to work together to ensure a brighter future for Wisconsin’s middle class."

"however unlike most Republicans "??? Mr. facts, name one Republican you have ever voted for.
Like cowdung stated, the 28 day residency rule has been in place for at least 20 years. I know that from my first registration. It probably has been there alot longer. As for the the robocalls claiming you don't have to vote if you signed the recall, let's wait to get some solid evidence. And this Wednesday voting rumor is an old joke. Conservatives are smart enough to know that as many people that vote Conservative as Liberal would believe it. Let's really get the fact before you post as "Just the facts".
CowDung June 6, 2012 at 03:27 pm
Actually, the '28 day rule' has only been in place since May of 2011. The previous requirement that had long been in effect was 10 days residency...

You know, I wondered if it was good for my mental health to come here and read this morning. With a few exceptions, you stand with Walker people are showing the same maturity and grace in your victory that I've come to expect during my year and a half on the Patch.
I don't agree with death threats. Please, people, don't do that. What I intend to do is hunker down, continue to pay my taxes and wait for them to rise. Hoffa, if I had believed for one minute that Walker's policies were going to help the average property taxpayer, I'd have supported him too, and to blazes with the teachers and the people on BadgerCare. But time will tell.

Ahhhh! There it is! The faux news comment! Did you mistake this for the huffy puffy post "just the facts"? You may now resume shuffling around in your robe and slippers while you mumble "Kock brothers" to yourself.
James R Hoffa June 6, 2012 at 04:22 pm
"... calling people from Republican Party hQ and telling voters election was Wed. or your vote is already registered if you signed a recall petition..."
Is there any solid objective proof that this was actually occurring? Or was this just part of the DPW whine and spin machine to gain some last minute free publicity before the polls closed? Damn those liberals - always wanting stuff for free!
James R Hoffa June 6, 2012 at 04:33 pm
@Randy1949 -
We're enjoying our victory - let us have our fun! That will take some time, as there are huge outstanding debt obligations that must be addressed first, such as he's already doing by taking care of our tab with Minnesota and repaying the illegally raided segregated funds. Once our debt is under control, state aid will return, and with a prosperous economy and the freedoms afforded to localities over their budgets via Act 10, there's no reason to think that property taxes shouldn't start to fall even more. But a majority of that is also contingent upon your local government's leadership and their decisions, so just keep that in mind and judge fairly. Maybe after his full term, and you've given him a chance, your opinion will start to change about him. But it will take more than one term for a complete turn around, especially with the stall tactics that we've had to endure by the recall crowd since last February. BTW - You haven't seen Schmitzy with my $50, have you?
Randy1949 June 6, 2012 at 04:45 pm
Hoffa, you were among the few exceptions. You're gloating, but at least you're doing it without name-calling and character aspersions about liberals.
Local government has nothing to do with my property tax problems unless you include the school district. As i said, time will tell about the property tax issue. I'd bet you money how things will be in a few years, but unlike 'Schmitzy' I don't have $50 to spare.

Randy, welcome back from the dark side.
Randy1949 June 6, 2012 at 05:00 pm
You mean because I said screw the teachers and the Medicaid recipients?
What you fail to understand is that I'm almost as big a fiscal conservative as the rest of you. I just didn't agree with the priorities and the unintended consequences of Walker's policies.
Bewildered June 6, 2012 at 05:01 pm
I knew that.

jojobo1 June 6, 2012 at 11:29 pm
So Walker won now lets see if he has learned his lesson that he should not divide the state.Randy sorry but I can't say screw the teachers.I am 67 and had the best teachers in Wisconsin.Much better than we have now. Back then they helped and encouraged at least for the most part.Taking way from our public schools is a big mistake and I have to tell everyone because of walkers stance on education my taxes went up on my home because the village had to make up the differance that walker took away from the blue ribbon district I live in .However at least on here right now people are not being as hateful as they have been and that goes for both sides.I just happen to believe waker is taking our state in the wrong direction and using coporate money to do so.
Randy1949 June 6, 2012 at 11:46 pm
@jojobo -- I think you missed the point that I was speaking sardonically about the teachers and the poor people. My property taxes went down by a whole whopping $100, and i expect they'll be shooting up again when the full effect of Walker's cuts hits us. Any time you move from the minuscule partial funding of schools through income tax (state aid) you put more burden on the property taxpayers like you and me.
Something needs to be done about the school levies, but i don't think the problem is the teachers. You're right, Walker is taking the state in the wrong direction.
Brian Dey June 6, 2012 at 11:52 pm
Randy- Boohoo... The fact is, more people voted for Walker this time, he waon by a larger margin. And wrong Randy, the village or any municpality doesn't comingle funds with school districts. THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE!
jojobo1 June 7, 2012 at 12:04 am
Sorry I misunderstood Randy and I fully agree. and Brian when the stae takes money away from education it has to be made up somehow and in my village we were taxed at 75% of our home value and it raised to 100% since walker took office and implemented his reductions on our blue ribbon public schools. And no the value of my home did not go down and I live in what may be considered a red part of the state.
Randy1949 June 7, 2012 at 12:09 am
It all goes on the same property tax bill, Brian, and I have no quarrel with the local government levy, which is very reasonable. So you're trying to tell me that the cuts in state aid to local school districts will have no effect at all upon how much more we'll have to either cut or raise from the property taxpayers? Pull the other one, Brian.
Randy1949 June 7, 2012 at 12:12 am
@jojobo -- The value of my home and land dropped by3/4 two years ago, and the tax bill remained the same. This year, thanks to Scott Walker, it went down a whole $100, less than a tenth of a percent. I'm soooo impressed. (I hope you can tell I'm being sarcastic.)
Greg June 7, 2012 at 12:27 am
If everyone in the village is valued at the same rate it really does not matter if it is 75 or 100%. Actually 100% or as close as you can get to it is the most fair. The levy is the total amount collected by the municipality and the mil rate is set by the valuation. State aid was cut but Act 10 gave local control to more than make up for the cuts. If your blue ribbon schools saw cuts, it would be on your school board and the teachers union.
CowDung June 7, 2012 at 12:30 am
Jojobo1:
Since when is having them pay a small portion of their health benefit and pension costs 'screwing the teachers'? Perhaps if they were being asked to pay the same percentages of those costs as the typical private sector worker does, I would agree. I think that the levels of their contributions are not at all unreasonable, particularly when one considers that everyone else in the working world is having to make sacrifices in their own compensation levels...
Greg June 7, 2012 at 12:37 am
Nothing that Walker did, it's been law for a long time.
"Beginning in 1986, the Department of Revenue (DOR) requires that all property be assessed at or near 100% of the fair market value. The DOR requires that the assessed value of a taxation district must be established within 10% of the full value at least once during the four year period consisting of the current year and the three preceding years."
Brian Dey June 7, 2012 at 12:37 am
Exactly Randy. In Racine alone, the healthcare change has saved nearly $30 million in a year and a half amounting to a projected $13 million surplus. It's working Randy.
Randy1949 June 7, 2012 at 12:42 am
I'm happy for you in Racine. i don't live in Racine.
Brian Dey June 7, 2012 at 12:42 am
You have a problem with your municipality, not the state. Assessments are handled locally. Caledonia does theirs on a 5 year cycle and they should be doing them this year. The mere fact that you saved $100 shows that it did what it was intended to do; less government spending and holding property taxes in check.
Randy1949 June 7, 2012 at 12:59 am
I have a problem with my school district, Brian. But the loss in state aid won't help.
James R Hoffa June 7, 2012 at 01:03 am
Here are undisputed FACTS:
Have the Koch Bros or Hendricks ever visited the Governor's mansion or executive office within the Capitol since Walker took office? Answer: NO Did the state of Wisconsin write the Koch's, Hendricks, and/or their respective direct interests a check since Walker took office? Answer: NO Did high dollar campaign bundlers visit the White House since Obama took office? Answer: YES Did the US Federal Government write a check to Obama's campaign bundlers and/or their direct interests? Answer: YES And yet, Walker is the sell-out to big money while Obama is the people's champion. Wake up and start THINKING!!!
Greg June 7, 2012 at 01:08 am
Did Barrett try to write a check his butt couldn't cash?
Answer: YES
Brian Dey June 7, 2012 at 01:12 am
I couldn't agree more, but you elected the incumbents.
Greg June 7, 2012 at 01:13 am
So Randy, lay-offs would have made you happy?
If you don't need that $100, send it to your school district. Send them as much as you want, just don't send them my money so they can give it to the likes of WEA Trust.
Greg June 7, 2012 at 03:09 am
I thought he did well. I wonder which candidate he drew voters from.
shawn June 7, 2012 at 10:05 am
Well said Hoffa. Unfortunately they live in the world of OZ. "Nothing to see here. Don't look behind the curtain".
