Council OKs Putting Police Officers at Major High School Events

Uniformed officers will be at football games, prom, dances and other big events at Muskego High School.

The Muskego Common Council on Tuesday unanimously signed off on a plan to provide police officers at major high school events.

School administrators approached the police department about providing an officer at events such as football games, prom and dances, and police believe it will be a deterrent for students not to misbehave, Police Chief Craig Moser said.

Police will work an estimated 178.5 hours of special events, which means a cost to the department of about $9,639, Moser said. The money comes out of the department's overtime budget.

The school district is picking up about 43 percent of the cost, with the city paying the rest, Moser said. It's similar to the arrangement for the school resource officer.

The move to use police officers at high school events comes amid concerns about heroin and other drugs in Muskego schools.
