Muskego Green Market Gets Warm Welcome

Muskego's local farmer's market is held from 3-7 p.m. Thursdays at the library.

Shannon Barbian always thought it silly that Muskego didn't have its own farmer's market, so she took it upon herself to organize one.

It turns out she wasn't alone in her desire for a local market. The Muskego Green Market, held 3-7 p.m. Thursdays in the parking lot of the Muskego Public Library, has seen strong turnouts in its inaugural season.

That's despite the wet weather that has led to a delay in produce. But, Barbian promises, it's on its way. And so are several other products—the Muskego Green Market has a rotating selection of offerings to keep people coming back.

Among the items at the last market June 26 were perennials, gourmet pretzels, honey and beeswax products, salsa, handmade beaded jewelry, BBQ ribs and much more

The market also has hot sandwiches and baked goods—perfect if you are heading to a Little League game or home from work, as Barbian points out.

"There really is something for everyone," Barbian said.

Barbian worked at the Brookfield farmer's market for three years, but always felt it was strange the city where she lived didn't have one.

"Being that we are a farming community, it seemed odd to me we didn't have one already," she said.

The first Muskego Green Market was held May 30 and it will continue until Sept. 5.

But Barbian is already thinking about next year. Building on the success of this year, organizers are considering expanding it into October and are hoping to recruit more food vendors, she said.
