Sixth grade girls from Muskego selected from the states "cream of the crop" and perform well at tournament in March
The Muskego 6th grade girls basketball team participated in the Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament in Merrill, Wausau and Marathon on March 23 and 24 for the second year in a row, and represented well, according to coach Eric Schroeder. "This is an invitation-only tournament, so our girls were chosen as the cream of the crop from among all of those in the state," Schroeder told Muskego Patch. "They did very well again this year, placing 5th among the teams from across the state." This tournament, which was organized by The Great Northwest Basketball League, brought together 83 of the top community-based 6th grade girls basketball teams from all across the State of Wisconsin. Schroeder said that while all of the girls …

The success of the 4-year-old kindergarten program has drawn praise from many on the school board, as well as approval for a continuation for next year.
Parents of preschool-age children will have the option to enroll their tots for the 2013-14 school year as the Muskego-Norway School Board voted to approve continuing 4-year-old kindergarten (4K) for another year. The program began with the 2010-11 school year and has seen steadily increasing enrollment (208 students are currently enrolled for this year), but will need board approval to continue. Statewide, 88 percent of school districts have 4K programs. The school board met Monday night to cast a final vote on the proposal, after a report from the district posted very positive results. Some of the statistics in that report included: Board member Mike Serdynski cast the only no vote, stating that he feared the costs of the program would …

Annual girls basketball tournament keeps its eye on the ball, as well as the need for filling the Food Pantry's shelves.
The 2nd annual Muskego Warriors Girls "Hoops for Hope" 4th-8th Grade Basketball Tournament will return to the courts at Muskego High School next weekend. As last year's inaugural tournament dictated, the focus will not just be on basketball, but feeding local families who are still struggling. "It is open to the public, and will involve both gyms at the high school," said Eric Schroeder, one of the organizers for the event. "We're offering $1 off admission with a nonperishable food donation, and for every food item up to 500 we are matching that dollar donation." Schroeder said the tournament is full, with about 40 teams participating over the two-day event. Saturday, Dec. 15th will feature 6th, 7th and 8th grades; 4th and 5th grades will…

Staff cuts will be recommended to DPI, and busing contract realizes some savings while allowing for a longer walk to the bus stop for some students; unexpected debate arises over a donation from PTO.
Recommended staffing non-renewals from the Muskego-Norway School District will stand, as board members voted unanimously Monday night to cut two part-time middle school math coaches and a part-time elementary teacher, as well as reducing the hours for one middle school Spanish teacher and an art teacher. In addition, a teaching position on layoff for the current year will remain as such in the coming 2012-13 year. The board approved the contracts for two positions in the Special Education Department, with full time services for occupational therapy (OT) as well as up to 30 hours per week for a physical therapist (PT) in the 2012-2013 school year. Each position's hourly rate was increased by $1, at $43 per hour for OT services and $50 per …

Muskego-Norway School Board discusses how wisely last days of school are being spent, but ultimately makes no changes to 2012-13 calendar.
The Muskego-Norway School Board approved the calendar for the 2012-13 school year Monday at Muskego Elementary School, with no changes being made to what was presented. The last day of school will be Thursday, June 13, but board member Eric Schroeder asked whether two additional days could be taken off the calendar in order to shorten the final week. "It seems like the last four days of school aren't spent in meaningful instruction. There's loose ends being tied up, kids are cleaning desks, and I wonder if we can't cut that down so it doesn't seem like we're wasting days," Schroeder said. Schroeder suggested adding class days around conference times twice a year to make up for the earlier release date. Kelly Thompson, assistant …

Realizing there's a lot that can happen that is out of their control, the board votes to move forward using 'conservative numbers' to anticipate state aid impact and the result on the tax levy.
Prior to the Muskego-Norway School Board discussing and making a decision on budget assumptions for the 2012-2013 year, one resident asked why the highest number for a tax increase was being used. Scot Ecker, who had developed the preliminary budget projections explained that he hoped the numbers were "overly cautious" in projecting a 4.89 percent increase to the tax levy as the decrease in state aid would decrease by an additional 5.6 percent from the 2011-2012 school year. The assumptions allow the district to begin planning for staffing and facilities needs in the coming year, but all agreed the situation with the state required flexibility. "We know our expenses, but because the number of school districts receiving aid has increased to…

The 4K program will live to see another year, with another review scheduled for December 2012.
Despite some uncertainty on how the program will be funded in the coming years, the Muskego-Norway School Board voted to keep the community-based 4K program. The vote was not unanimous, however, with Eric Schroeder and Mike Serdynski voting no. While MNSD qualified for a special adjustment because of the loss of state aid, the state also changed the trigger to qualify for that aid so far more districts now qualify. Even though funding was increased to these districts, the method of distribution resulted in an inequitable decrease in funding, with MNSD losing a higher percentage than other districts that were considered poorer and wealthier. As State aid is based on one year and applied in the following year, the 2012-2013 school year won't…

Candidates may begin filing papers today through Jan. 3rd. Who will be on the ballot so far?
If you haven't gotten enough election talk yet, Muskego has begun its season today, as candidates may begin filing papers for aldermanic seats, municipal judge and school board. Muskego Common Council seats for the first, third and fifth districts, currently held by Tracy Snead, Neil Borgman and Dan Soltysiak respectively, will be up for re-election in 2012. Presently Borgman and Soltysiak have announced they will run again. Inquiries to Alderman Snead have not been answered yet. In addition, second district alderman Kert Harenda will have the option to run for the third district seat, as redistricting has meant he will no longer be living in the second district. Should he decide to continue in his district, he will not need to relinquish…

Interested residents of the district may file their applications at the Educational Services Center (ESC) beginning December 1, 2011. Applications will also only be available at the ESC.
