Bay Lane students were reminded again of the impact of brain injury as classmates' brother suffered concussions, and respond with a fundraiser to help Children's Hospital research
Often kids don't connect with serious illness or death....that's something for old people. However, Bay Lane Middle School students have known intimately that life is precious at any age, and you don't have to be old to encounter traumatic events. Evan Coubal was a 6th grader at the school when he died after a fall on the playground during recess in September 2010. His passing brought attention to the seriousness of children who receive concussions, either through sports or by just being kids. This year, twin sisters and eighth graders Kat and Lauren Wahlen experienced a similar struggle as their brother Webb, a 10-year-old who attends Tess Corners Elementary, experienced more than one concussion. The events sent him to Children's Hospital…

Legacy of Evan Coubal reflected in middle schooler's chosen topic for a report on concussions.
When we were kids, it was a term heard only in relation to car accidents or falls from high places, and sounded awful: concussion. However, in meeting with the Project i class at Bay Lane Middle School about a month ago, and offering my continued assistance in promoting student journalism, it's obviously a term all too familiar for them. One student, Joseph (Joe) Meyer, recently asked if I would want to post his report on concussions. Knowing the condition has drawn the attention of the NFL in providing harsher fines for helmet-to-helmet contact, and keeping players off the field for longer periods of time in the aftermath of one, it's relevant. Knowing that one of our own young people, Evan Coubal, died from a concusion makes it …

An observance at Acres of Hope is dedicated to lives lost and lives changed.
On a sunny Sunday afternoon, tucked away from larger ceremonies recalling a horrific act, a simple and beautiful tribute honored two injured veterans and a boy who died too soon. Acres of Hope and Aspirations, a five-acre rehabilitation center specifically for individuals recovering from traumatic brain injury, presented the ceremonies on September 11. Lisa Alberte, the RN who helps to rehabilitate patients, felt the day was a perfect opportunity to recall Evan Coubal, an 11-year-old boy from Bay Lane Middle School who died from a head injury on the playground within weeks of a similar injury playing football. With an audience of friends and family members, community visitors and staff, as well as resident therapy animals, Muskego High …

Death and life of 11-year-old Muskego boy will be remembered on a day to remember.
The time and place couldn't be more appropriate for a memorial planned for Evan Coubal, a Muskego boy at Bay Lane Middle School, who was 11 years old when he passed away on September 5, 2010 from a brain injury. Acres of Hope and Aspirations, W147 S7138 Durham Place, will dedicate a stone garden bench at their Gardens of Hope. Acres is a rehabilitation facility assisting patients recovering from brain injury. Coubal died shortly after he had hit his head on the playground at school, and about a week prior had suffered a concussion during a youth football game. The date that Lisa Alberte, who runs the facility, and Evan's mother Mary chose was September 11, which for everyone is a day that evokes remembering. The grounds will be open from …

There seems to be no end to things that divide us, but area 9/11 events provide a moment for unity.
We are fortunate in Muskego to have two ceremonies that are commemorating the 10th anniversary of the attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and the plane crash in Pennsylavania that no doubt thwarted a fourth on a building of significance. One ceremony will take place at 1pm at City Hall, presented by the American Legion; the other is at Acres of Hope, open to the public at 1pm, with the ceremony featured at 2pm. This event is also going to honor the one year anniversary for Evan Coubal, who died from a head injury at Bay Lane Middle School. I'd like to look at these as not in competition, but a way to accommodate the many who would like to attend a memorial. Just as people gathered in the days after 9/11 ten years ago, just to be …

We launched an iPhone/iPad app, called It’s Done!, that has become a helpful tool for TBI survivors worldwide. It helps users recall whether routine everyday tasks are done: Did I lock the door? Turn off the stove? Take my medication? It even notifies loved ones/caregivers when tasks are done. We're grateful It's Done! has improved the quality of life for people with short-term memory loss and …   more ›
