Summer Event Promises to be as Easy as a Walk in the Parks

Women's Business Connections partners with the parks department to get families out and active to discover all of Muskego's parks.

Along with the coming edition of the Muskego Parks and Recreation Department Activity Guide will be an opportunity to play a little BINGO while you're discovering all of Muskego's parks. Women's Business Connections (WBC), a newly formed group that is a part of the Muskego Chamber of Commerce, has developed a partnership with the parks department to take "A Walk in the Parks." The seven-week long event will encourage residents to visit all of Muskego's 14 parks as well as Engel Conservation Area and Muskego County Park. "We found that many people who live in Muskego don't know where many of its parks are, and we thought this would be a great way to introduce families to them by holding weekly events and making a game of it," explained Gail…

The Five Most Interesting People of 2012

I have had the privilege of meeting many of you; whether it was a brief conversation, or an ongoing observation over the course of the year, these are my picks for those people who made things happen in Muskego.

I'm humbled whenever I consider the position I have. I get to tell your stories, whether it's crime, fire, personal triumph, or even just a fun weekend activity that brings a smile to kids' faces.  This is not a scientific list, nor indicative of how well I may have gotten to know people personally; it's just my observation of who always seemed to 'be there' when something was happening in the community. There is also no meaning to the order, so don't read into it. 1. Suzi Link - folks either love her or hate her, but I have to admit she shows up. A lot of long Common Council meetings during much of the year would have worn others out, but Link has been a perennial presence to argue her point and to make sure the aldermen take the public …

Denise - That always confuses me too! I understand that all of us have very full plates. Fortunately, not all issues strike a chord for each Muskego resident. For the issues that do get our respective hearts pumping, however, we have to make the effort to state our opinions in the appropriate setting to have a constructive impact. (I realize that standing up in front of a group is intimidating …   more ›

New Group Forming to 'Grow Women'

Women's Business Connections forms out of Muskego Chamber of Commerce, with the goal of helping area women develop professionally and personally

It stands to reason that with the top three areas in the city - government, schools and business - being represented by women, why not organize a group to help all women in Muskego develop their business, and their future? "We want to provide a place for women to come and network, learn from each other about their areas of expertise, grow their business, and in short grow women" said Beth Schmidt, one of the group's co-founders. An initial brainstorming session was held Wednesday at the Muskego Public Library, with a healthy turnout of about two dozen. Along with Schmidt, attorney Debra Skurulsky of Muskego Legal, and Gail Levin, owners of Curves are the group's founders. The organization is a wing of the Chamber of Commerce, and women …

It's a shame that this group doesn't allow non chamber members to be part of it. There are quite a few local business owners who have a lot to offer this group that are not members.   more ›

Season's Eatings: Developing the Muscle in Your Willpower

Back at the gym, I'm hoping that work I'm doing doesn't go to waste in the face of party trays of cheese, sausage, crackers and dip. Here are some tips from local fitness-ista, Gail Levin to help have your 'cake' and eat it too

Some of you may recall my stint with Accel Fitness' boot camp, and my determination to stick with it.  Technically, I did, but my schedule and the times classes were offered began to argue with one another, and I was back off the wagon. While I picked up running again in spring and through summer, I knew it wasn't the only type of exercise I needed. Most fitness experts agree it's not just a combination of diet and exercise that will get you on the path of weight loss, but also the type of exercise. Keeping ALL of your muscle groups engaged is a more effective way to exercise and lose weight while doing it. As Accel has departed, I have joined up with the crew at Curves in Muskego, and have adapted a program to keep me challenged and to …

Gail Force: Muskego's Lil Mud Hen

Curves owner Gail Levin has had some unconventional jobs, but the experience has given her a sense of adventure even as she's come to settle down.

If you were to read the job description of a mud logger, chances are you'd pass on the 'opportunity,' or at least not envision the perfect candidate as a five-foot-nothing woman in the role. However, if you know Gail Levin, who owns the Curves in Muskego, you may see her taking on the task and think, 'that makes sense.' Levin's personality is vibrant and for all of her short stature, she's got a ton of energy. As a 19-year-old striking out on her own from Wisconsin to Louisiana to take a court reporter's job in 1977, the thrill wouldn't last, and her pursuit of 'something different' led her to work in the oil fields for two years. "There was too much sitting, and I had gotten to know people who had interesting jobs, like a tug boat cook, …

Nutrition Re-Emphasized at Muskego Fitness Facility

Weight loss struggles aren't solved by working out more, and clients are being counseled more on nutrition.

Based on what we've been  undergoing at 'boot camp,' the idea of sweat equity equaling weight loss is no longer the case. While cardio and conditioning help to build muscle, and burn calories at a higher rate, it's really about the weight you lift at the end of your fork that makes all the difference. Most recently, Curves’ in Muskego has undergone a rebranding effort to step up their image of being a “30-minute fitness and weight loss center.”  According to owner Gail Levin, "This November the theme of our annual convention was the 'Reinvention Convention.' Curves has always married exercise and diet.  But now, we are reinventing ourselves to become “a moderately priced weight-loss center with a gym.” Levin said Curves went to great …

Muskego Curves Flexes Its Heart Muscle, Again

'Quiet' acts of kindness and outreach from the workout facility have made a difference to many in and around Muskego

Gail Levin is the force of nature behind the Muskego Curves facility, and for the past 11 years, she's quietly helped to inspire and organize members in donating food and gifts to our communities.  "We are not a religious organization, but nonetheless spiritual and giving in nature," Levin said. "Around Thanksgiving time each year, the Curvettes begin asking, 'Will you have ornaments with names and ages on the giving tree again this year?'  And if I don’t react fast enough, they are quick to follow up with, 'When will you have the ornaments . . .?'" Levin and her 'Curvettes' gathered gifts for Waukesha homeless shelter residents. This year, they supplied about 20 beautifully wrapped gifts to the Siena House, after they were given a list of…
