I just found out that my Dad is going on the June Flight. I couldn't be more proud of him to be able to go on this journey with his fellow vets. Many thanks to all that have served our country so that we can enjoy the freedoms we do. Living out of State, my only regret is not being able to be there when they depart on their Historic journey and return back home with many renewed brothers in arms …   more ›

55,000 Viewers Later: Honor Flight Film Continues to Make History

Director Dan Hayes, a native of Wauwatosa, remembers the "electricity" in the air when the documentary set a record for largest film screening in history over the summer — and looks forward to continuing on with the film's journey.

After a second stint back on the big screen in Marcus theatres across Wisconsin, the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight documentary has touched the lives of more than 55,000 viewers, Honor Flight officials say. The Stars and Stripes Honor Flight Facebook page is chock full of comments from people in the Milwaukee area who saw the film this week, offering gracious praise about the power of the film's message. "I believe people recognize that —  in a way — these heroes are the new Ghost Soldiers. Now you see them, now you don't," Stars and Stripes Honor Flight founder Joe Dean said. "Over 1,000 WWII heroes die every single day in this country. It is beyond our ability to describe how grateful we are that so many people recognize this fleeting …

Dad served in the South Pacific during WWII. He died this past April just 10 days short of his 96th birthday. Three naval officers presented us with an American flag and a wonderful gun salute at his grave site. It was so appropriate and touching. I'm very glad that Honor Flight is happening now, as there just aren't many of these noble veterans left. God bless America and all it stands for!   more ›

PHOTO GALLERY: Field of Honor Hits a Home Run

Miller Park is the site for a day of honor and remembrance for veterans from the greatest generation and then some, breaking a world record in the process.

The showing of a documentary based on the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight brought tears to the eye, cheers from the crowd and broke a record for attendance. "Field of Honor," a documentary based on the journey of veterans to visit their war memorials in Washington, D.C., had its premier showing at Miller Park to a nearly sold-out crowd estimated at 33,000. Official totals confirmed by a representative of the Guiness Book of World records put the exact attendance at 28,442. The Honor Flight Network began in 2004 when Earl Morse, a retired air force captain and physician's assistant at a VA clinic in Ohio realized most of his patients who were World War II vets had neither the funds nor the physical ability to make the trip to see their own …

Honor Flight Asks Residents to 'Do More' this Weekend

Honor Flight launches a new website with information about its upcoming Field of Honor event in Miller Park, including the story of a volunteer who's Honor Flight trip was made possible by friend's donations.

Stars and Stripes Honor Flight is asking the public to share veterans' stories this weekend as a way to help spread the word and honor the sacrifices made by these soldiers. As part of the organizations "#DoMore" campaign, the group has issued its Memorial Day Challenge of getting, "50,000 views for this video about Harley-riding Ryan Jazak, who accompanied a vet on an Honor Flight with the support of his brother serving in Afghanistan," according to the website. Late Friday afternoon, the video had just under 2,000 views. The challenge is also additional promotion for the Stars and Stripes upcoming Field of Honor event in Miller Park. Honor Flight Veterans Return to a Warm Welcome

Hundreds of World War II Era veterans are treated to a trip to Washington, D.C., to visit their memorial. It's a journey that has been repeated several times before, but never gets old.

Most veterans are modest about their service, but often what details they won't tell you, their families will. Waiting for their heroes to come back from the latest Honor Flight at General Mitchell International Airport on a day that began 15 hours before, families wearing shirts with much younger faces in uniform are eager to share who they are waiting for. Richard Lyon of Glendale had a whole posse of family members, identifiable by gray shirts bearing his picture from the United States Navy. He served on the USS Requin, a naval submarine, in the Pacific theatre, although his enlistment would come just as surrender was declared. He had first attempted to enlist as a 16-year-old, lying about his age.  However, his mother found out before …

Thanks for sharing, Ron. It's an awesome experience to see them come home. My generation doesn't often get that opportunity that often to be part of a community event that collectively thanks those who have gone before us and fought for our freedoms. While it's all about honoring the WWII vets, it's also a strong message to the younger generations about remembering their sacrifices and …   more ›

Making WAVES During World War II

Resident at Muskego Regency recalls service in the Navy and the joy of coming home, again.

Marion Belohlav was recovering from pneumonia, but was determined to share her story as a Navy WAVES (women accepted for voluntary emergency service) during World War II.  Our visit was brief, yet her story made for a full morning. "My dad had served in World War I, and he had wanted to enlist again, but he was turned down," she said of her own interest to serve.  "Although, I would have joined anyway, because we all just wanted to get that war over with." Marion's experience entering into the corps was as a dancer and she said they admittedly "had no idea what to do with me, so they assigned me to the hospital corps." Her basic training was at Hunter College in New York, and as she still wanted to entertain, she continued with hospital …
