Jammin' 2013 Looking for Business Input

The official kickoff meeting for the 2013 events is Jan. 22, and businesses are urged to attend to make the 3rd annual event a success

What better day could there be to pass along this news of summer? The first committee meeting for Jammin' on Janesville was held Dec. 11 at the office of the Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism to introduce the marketing plan for 2013.  Chamber Executive Director Tina Weiss said the marketing plan seemed to be very well received, so the next step in planning is to organize the business leaders at an "All Business Meeting" on Jan. 22nd. Last year, the meeting drew well over 100 businesses to listen in to what sponsorships existed, and organizers are promising an even bigger event this year. "This is the last year of construction, so we want this to be a big event, as we know the format will likely change after 2013," said …

Defining Distribution of Wealth: City Looks to Clarify Which Organizations It Will Fund

After a contentious debate over funding events like Jammin' on Janesville, and services like Muskego Senior Taxi, the city hopes to clear up what its role will be for future requests for help

After approving the budget, which included funding for Muskego Senior Taxi and Jammin' on Janesville, the Common Council hoped to avoid any future misunderstanding over what organizations and events they would consider funding. Alderman Neil Borgman told the council, "We need to have a policy going forward to state if it's a civic organization, the city can get involved. I don't think we should be in the business of giving money to nonprofits, and it would serve as a guideline for future councils." The discussion came up in earlier committee of the whole meetings when some aldermen expressed concern over supporting the Jammin' on Janesville festival for another year. It opened the door for discussion on what organizations the city has …

Businesses Defend Jammin' Funding

Numerous business owners came out Tuesday night to argue for funding as the third and final year of construction looms in 2013.

The final year of Janesville Road construction is scheduled for 2013, and with that, the city will likely fund the Jammin on Janesville events for another year at the same levels it's seen in the past two years, but not without more debate. Business owners came to the Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday night to speak out for continued funding of $19,000 in 2013, which helps to offset the cost to market the event. Two previous COW meetings had left doubt that the summer event would see the same level of support from the city, with several aldermen concerned that the amount was too high. Dan Koehler, incoming president for the Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism said the businesses still need the city's help, as they are already…

I would like to address some of the comments here. While I was fortunate enough to generate "Record Sales Weeks" during the construction. Particularly after the first JoJ event; I did not generate record profits. I actually broke even over a three week period, in which each week was a successive record week. Why did I just break even? Re-investment! Everything I made over those three weeks went …   more ›

Senior Taxi Funding OK'd for 2013, but Jammin' Faces Cuts

Aldermen say the popular senior program has merit, but the summer street festival can do with less funding

The Muskego Senior Taxi will continue to receive funding from the city in 2013 at the same level it has in past years, but Jammin' on Janesville will likely face a cut. Meetings at the Committee of the Whole Tuesday, aldermen asked questions of representatives from the taxi service, which provides low-cost rides for Muskego seniors, to determine if they would continue to approve a $5,000 request for funding in 2013. The organization started about six years ago and has received city funds every year since. At issue was not whether the program was a benefit to the city, but rather how the city should categorize funding for this and other community organizations and services. "There are a lot of other organizations that would appreciate the …

Gregory, great thought, but not that is not the purpose of the Jammin events. The purpose was and continues this year to be: to make guests and our community aware of businesses on the Janesville Rd. corridor. This was part of a toolkit to help businesses survive during a very difficult time of road construction. We can go to the community festival for what you are describing. We do not want to …   more ›

How Should the City Fund Jammin' on Janesville, Other Events?

The combined $24,000 in the 2013 budget for Jammin' on Janesville and Muskego Senior Taxi has aldermen wondering how to handle these repeated requests for funding from community organizations.

While the city has said yes to repeated funding requests from Jammin on Janesville and Muskego Senior Taxi, aldermen are now talking about when to pull the plug—and how to keep the community funding system fair. Aldermen started talking about the issue during Thursday's Committee of the Whole meeting about the 2013 budget, and realized they aren't sure how to handle repeated requests from organizations for city funding.  Requests in the 2013 operational budget include $19,000 from the Chamber of Commerce to help support the three events of Jammin' on Janesville, as well as $5,000 for Muskego Senior Taxi. Many aldermen started to question whether these requests should remain separate line items in the budget or if it was time for the city …

The city should set aside some funds for Jammin and Muskego Taxi. We should not bust the bank for these things but these are events and services residents do enjoy having. As for the Jammin event, this is not the city funding the Chamber but the city supporting an event that promotes Muskego business and brings residents together. How is that a bad thing to support? I hope MEG is not trying to …   more ›

A Hot Time at July Jammin'

Remember being chilly at June's Jammin' on Janesville? Well, you won't have to worry about that for July's edition of Muskego's street party.

As the sun set on June's Jammin' on Janesville, it was good to have a coat on. That memory will be easily wiped away at the July 6 Jammin', as temps at the start of the festival will be into the 90s. Muskego Patch will be in attendance along with about 85 other local businesses - visit us just across from Muskego Elementary School at DeWinter Eye Care! So, what's new at the July Jammin? Muskego Food Pantry will be the festivals nonprofit beneficiary, sponsored by Sandoval Dental care. Food needs soar into the summer, as kids who normally receive reduced cost lunches are home and the need increases, so look for them at Lincoln Point (College Avenue and Janesville Road) and help them to fill a truck with nonperishable food items. Dock diving…

The Week Ahead: May 27 - June 2

We're walking into the first summer Jammin', and want to hear what you'll be up to if you're a business or organization

After a couple of busy weeks, we're looking at a lighter-than-usual stretch ahead, with no scheduled meetings at city hall on a shortened work week. However, the good news is that we'll be highlighting different facets of the upcoming Jammin' on Janesville on Friday, June 1 and hope to talk with our friends at Relay for Life, which will be taking place at Muskego High School on June 1 as well. We are also hoping to catch up with the comings and goings at Muskego-Norway School District offices. Dr. Joe Schroeder will be superintendent for only one more month, and newly-hired Dr. Kelly Thompson will be stepping into the lead role, vacating her position as assistant 'super' at the same time. These are the weeks where a fairly quiet news …
