Year in Review: Crimes, Misdemeanors, Courts and Fire

The police files got your attention this year, whether the case was tragic or just troublesome. Here's a look back at the stories which were looked at the most.

  We started the year with a tragic story from Milwaukee after a couple with local ties were killed while waiting at a stop light. Ed and Jean Thaves were not Muskego residents, but their business S.C. Chemical Company, was located here. That this garnered the readers that it did showed how much our readers cared about this couple and the company that mourned their loss. Kelly Duke, the driver who fled the scene, pleaded no contest to all counts including two counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle in October, and awaits sentencing on Jan. 13. 2013. Muskego Business Owners' Family Sees Latest Ploy As Stall Tactic

Driver of the car that killed Ed and Jean Thaves on New Year's day is requesting mental evaluation, but family says they're stalling, and has collected signatures to petition court should they request a reduction in bail.

The latest chapter in the proceedings against Kelly Duke, the 17-year-old who struck Ed and Jean Thaves' car, killiing them on New Year's Day, has family members enraged and frustrated. Duke is charged with homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle, and a recent appearance in court by the defendent was supposed to be a bail hearing, but the defense instead motioned for a mental evaluation instead of the expected motion to lower Duke's $200,000 bail. "He ran from the scene, made it home two miles from the scene, and asked for a new Defense Attorney as early as January 24th, that suddenly now he's supposedly incompetent," Edwin Thaves, son of Edwin, Sr., told a reporter for WTMJ. Muskego Business Owners' Family Releases Statement After Crash

S.C. Chemical Company owners Ed and Jean Thaves were killed in the New Year's Day crash, and family asks for privacy and to reserve judgment.

Ed and Jean Thaves died as a result of a collision as they sat waiting at a stop light early on New Year's day at the intersection of 27th Street and St. Paul Avenue. The 17-year-old driver of the other vehicle has been identified as Kelly Duke. He was charged Wednesday with seven felonies, including two counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle  The couple owned S.C. Chemical Company in the Muskego Business Park, and the family recently issued a statement on the tragic events: "Words do not seem adequate to express the loss of Ed and Jean in the tragic incident of New Year's Day.  We are thankful for the outpouring of kindness expressed by those who knew and loved them."
