Despite wind, rain and cold temps, the start of the summer season was part of the spirit as the Muskego Athletic Association holds its kickoff celebration
Paul Peardon was probably as excited as any of the hundreds of kids in attendance at the Muskego Athletic Association kickoff celebration Saturday at Bluhm Park. The MAA event chairman was also the emcee for the events offered to families who came out to celebrate the start of youth baseball for summer. This was the first such event that the organization has held, and high winds, cold temperatures and occasional rain was not going to dampen the spirit. "People have been great - there were actually a few more out here earlier before the sun even came out, and we're thrilled to see the involvement," Peardon said. The baseball program features about 40 teams for kids from ages 6 to 14 years old, and it appeared like all of the teams were out …

The Muskego Athletic Association has penned its commitment to play at the new park, and is footing the bill for the three smaller baseball fields
Another big piece of the Park Arthur puzzle was put into place Monday night, as Parks Director Craig Anderson said he has received a letter of commitment from the Muskego Athletic Association to fund the construction of the three smaller baseball fields there. The commitment includes $135,000 in funds, which will give teams registered through MAA the ability to play there on a priority basis. A larger, regulation-sized field is already well under way, with similar support for that field coming from the Warriors Youth Baseball league. Other Park Arthur updates at Monday's Parks Board meeting include:

Veteran recalls four years in the Navy, seeing the world and revisiting the ship 43 years later.
Family and friends have characterized Art Benotti as "one busy guy," and to catch his story of military experience during the Vietnam war took a little bit of scheduling. The vice president of the Muskego Athletic Association is also active in the VFW Post 8171 in Muskego, and according to his wife Carol keeps a pretty active schedule since 'retiring' after 28 years with the phone company. Benotti's experience in the U.S. Navy as an internal communications specialist on the USS Enterprise led him to the career with AT&T, but it also led him to places criss-crossing the globe in the four years he served aboard the aircraft carrier. Enlisting from his hometown of Boston, MA, an 18-year-old Benotti was sent to the Great Lakes Naval Station in…

Investment in baseball fields by Muskego Athletic Association will replace fencing, benches at three of the four playing areas at Bay Lane Middle School.
Recently, improvements were made to the baseball facilities at Bay Lane Middle School. The fences and benches on all of the baseball fields have needed attention for some time now and with the uncertainty of the past school referendums nothing was ever done about it. Beginning Friday some of those much needed repairs will took place, and are expected to be completed by the end of the weekend. The Muskego Athletic Association voted unanimously Wednesday evening to invest the money, which amounted to several thousand dollars, to repair and replace the fences, posts and benches at Bay Lane Fields #2, 3 & 4. The work was performed by J & R Fence out of Waukesha and will be a noticeable upgrade to the facilities in addition to making it a …

A NY Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat
Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." However, Muskego Athletic Association member, coach and dad Paul Peardon said it's possible to outfit without outrageousness. "As a father, coach and league director I have to monitor equipment costs pretty…

Initial resolution will be accompanied by another that outlines more detail on ad hoc committee, with alderman hopeful there isn't another 4-3 split
With a full membership of the Muskego Common Council expected on Tuesday, discussion on the proposed lake park purchase can move forward. The 4.6-acre parcel already has an offer to purchase by the city; the property is owned by Michael Dilworth, and has been the point of passionate debate by residents. Opponents feel the $3.55 million price tag is too high and that the city has not completed other park developments. Proponents have cited that the lake frontage offered is an ideal location for a second park on the lake, with the other (Idle Isle Park) having parking limitations and being difficult to find. A proposal by Mayor Kathy Chiaverotti was to be introduced and discussed on Feb. 28, but problems with open meetings regulations kept …
