So who is that guy braving the elements to bag and serve Kettle Corn in Muskego?
The red canopy has become a part of the downtown landscape, and is as likely to be seen on a sunny day in May as it is during a gray November morning. Serving kettle corn for the better part of the last four years, and the past two in front of Muskego Beer and Liquor every weekend, Richard Knudsen said he took up the business after being laid off from a longtime position at Waukesha Engine. "I lost my job, and wasn't getting anywhere," Knudsen told Muskego Patch. "This was something I had always thought of doing, so I got started, and it's just taken off, especially after we started Jammin' on Janesville." If the name seems familiar, Knudsen is a former alderman for the city, serving in the 1990s. He said that he sells nearly every …

Police still investigating leads, but inventory of stolen product is about $10,000 according to store owner.
It hasn't been a happy new year for the Fischer family, who owns Muskego Beer and Liquor, and now there is a dollar figure to their loss. Sometime overnight on Jan. 2 store was burglarized, and police have been looking into various leads, but also asking for the community's help. The department said the break in occurred between the hours of 9 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday and at first Craig Fischer, family member and owner of the store, could only guess at the amount of items taken. However, reports stated that at least 50 cases of top-shelf liquor was taken in the incident at a cost of $8,660, but Fischer said that he since inventoried additional losses, bringing that total closer to about $10,000. Reports state the suspect or …

An overnight break-in of the longtime family business has police looking for information and store owners stunned that it could happen.
Sometime overnight on Jan. 2 the Muskego Beer and Liquor store was burglarized, and police are asking for the community's help. Posting a plea on their Facebook page, the department said the break in occurred between the hours of 9 p.m. Wednesday and 7 a.m. Thursday. Craig Fischer, family member and owner of the store, which has been a Muskego business since 1970, was emotional when he spoke with Muskego Patch on the nature of the incident. "They took...a lot," Fischer said, shaking his head. "It sucks...I hope they catch the guy - I can't believe it." Apparently the suspect or suspects broke in, damaging a door, and stole top shelf liquor in the overnight hours. No damage estimate was available. If you have any information, you are …

Interest in business renovations accompanies Janesville Road facelift, prompting city planners to consider extending special taxing district so businesses would be eligible for loans.
Some businesses along the Janesville Road corridor have come under fire for looking like eyesores, so the city is considering helping them out by extending a special taxing district - which would make them eligible for low-interest loans. Tax incremental financing districts are set up by cities to encourage business development. Typically, TIF districts are used to fund public improvements, like sewers and roads, on new development. However, Muskego and other cities also use TIF funds to make loans to businesses within a TIF district, Owners use that money to make improvements to their businesses, which should boost their property values. The additional tax revenue generated by the improvements then goes toward paying off the loans. …

Little Muskego Lake Association continues partnership with the parks department to transform the island park, one project at a time.
"I cannot believe what a difference less than one year makes," said Lisa Niles of the Little Muskego Lake Association (LMLA). Referring to the transformation of the shoreline at Idle Isle Park, before and after pictures do show a vast improvement from the overgrown grasses and weeds that had greeted boaters and swimmers there. Most recently, the LMLA donated a sign valued at $2,000 to upgrade the look of the older, green sign that had listed the rules and regulations. It was installed late last week. "This was really a joint effort with LMLA and the Muskego Park and Rec Department," Niles said. "In addition, all plants were donated by Shady Acres, Steins, Gingerbread House, Muskego Liquor, Cousins, and various other donors." As happened …

Plenty of pines to choose from around the city, and in many shapes and sizes to fit your home.
Well before Thanksgiving, we spotted the Christmas tree lot signs popping up around town and wanted to make it easier for you to find them. It's likely we'll add to this list, so stay tuned and happy hunting! Basse's Country Delight - well decked out and trees just delivered, the truckloads left behind hundreds of balsam, fraser, and Canaan pine, which is a hybrid balsam/fraser. Owners say it offers the scent of a balsam and the greener color of a fraser. All trees come from Shawano, WI. They also sell wreaths, pointsettias and Christmas decor. Cut Your Own on Parker Drive - just south of Muskego High School off of Racine Ave., this lot is one of a few that allow the 'Clark Griswold' in you out. Grab a bow saw, and choose from balsam and …
