Patch captured a few of the sights and sounds as the Muskego Community Festival opened officially. Feel free to add your photos to the gallery on this or any of our festival stories.
Despite a very brief and random rain shower, the Friday night festivities at Veteran's Memorial Park went off without a hitch. Organizers opened the festival with a ceremony involving the American Legion Post 356 and VFW Post 8171 presiding with the colors. Wally Spitzer wanted everyone to know that the newest thing at the festival this year was the look of the midway. "I noticed we lost the ferris wheel this year, but the rides added are terrific and really family-friendly," he said. Bounce rides and a giant slide are part of the midway, provided by Calkins, and the number of tickets (which are 50 cents each for food, beverages and rides no matter how many you purchase) that each ride requires falls between five and eight. For the adults …

From the desk of Lt. Dave Constantineau, a few notes of thanks, welcome and advice on the upcoming festival: National Night Out Despite Mother Nature’s best efforts, Muskego’s 5th Annual National Night Out was another big, albeit damp, success! I really think all the positive energy we generated worked to push all the rain out of the area. We even had a flyover by some fighter jets! I told everyone I arranged the flyover but, truth be told, I think they were practicing for last week’s air show. In any event, we had a great time. The Lions Club gave away 30 bicycles and a few hundred bike helmets; the fire department had some great demonstrations again this year; The Gleason’s gave us more fantastic live music; kids got their faces painted …
After the opening round and nearly 20 contestants, the field has been narrowed to 10 in this increasingly popular local singing competition.
A recent tradition in the history of the Muskego Community Festival has been a new opening night, featuring a family theme, no alcohol served on the grounds and of course the increasingly popular 'Muskeg's Teen Idol' competition. Started about six years ago and overseen by the Teen Advisory Board, this year's event, which is our local version of American Idol, will also be supported by the Muskego Performing Arts Council. An opening round of auditions at the August 3 Jammin' on Janesville narrowed a field of 19 contestants to 10. These teens will now compete Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. to advance to the finals on Saturday. Both semi-final and final rounds will be played out under the Muskego Fest Family Tent. Saturday's finals will be …

Road project is nowhere near complete, but road crews will make way for crowds, traffic as the Muskego Community Festival nears, and schedule provides plenty to do.
One of Muskego's road projects has seen Pioneer Drive off limits for through traffic since June, but even though road crews won't be finished with the job, city officials confirm there will be access during the Muskego Community Festival. Adam Trzebiatowski with the city planner's office said that road crews will suspend work during the festival, which runs Thursday, August 23 to Sunday, August 26. Pedestrians and vehicles will be able to travel through the area, and some limited shoulder parking will be available. Additional parking is also available on the City Hall grounds, along Racine Avenue, and at the Old Settlement Centre adjacent to the grounds. Despite the construction, events will still provide plenty for festival goers to enjoy…

Hard to believe the Muskego Community Festival has been running for 25 years, but new attractions keep the event fresh
The Muskego Community Festival returns in about 10 days, and it's celebrating its 25th anniversary with a few new elements, even as it looks back. Muskego had its original festival, Country Fair Days, operate for many years until the VFW could not handle the growing size of the event. After taking one year off, VFW members gathered seven other groups to organize a new festival in a new venue (the original site was where the Pick n Save mall currently stands). Along with the VFW, the Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce, the Muskego Lions Club, the Muskego Icetronauts, the Muskego American Legion, the Muskego Moose Lodge, the Muskego Athletic Association and the Little Muskego Lake Association and the Muskego Woman's Club now form the …

Among the agenda items is a reconsideration on a vote to approve business zoning for pub on Janesville, which has divided residents on familiar lines.
After a thumbs up at the Plan Commission meeting on June 9, and a technical thumbs down at the Common Council meeting, DJ's future may take another turn on Tuesday. The pub has been at the center of debate for the past several weeks as it is seeking to be rezoned for a commercial use. The property it sits on has been residential even though there has always been a business in its current building, but it will be razed during Janesville Road construction. Rebuilding the pub and restaurant will require rezoning to a 'downtown revival' designation, which has had neighbors nervous over the impact. A 4-2 vote in favor of granting the rezoning on July 10 was not enough, as neighbors had filed a petition of protest requiring a three-fourths vote …
