PHOTOS: Muskego Pet Fair

Lots to learn about for all creatures great and small, who brought their owners out on a sunny Saturday afternoon

The Muskego Pet Fair had some competition on Saturday, as another community was also putting on the dog with Wagfest, however the weather and a caring bunch of residents and rescues alike made the second year of the event a success. Walgreen's sponsored the event at the corner of Janesville Road and Racine Avenue, and saw partners like HAWS, Yellow Brick Road Rescue, the Muskego Food Pantry and numerous other rescues come out to provide information, pet supplies and even offer an opportunity for pets to get their picture taken. Proceeds were shared with the area nonprofits. Got a great photo from the fair, or just want to share your pet's pic with Patch? Upload it to this article!

Pet Fair Returns With a Bigger Paw Print

Interest has grown from last year's first appearance say organizers, and will include more vendors to provide information on safety, nutrition and health of your favorite furry friend.

Walgreen's at the corner of Racine Avenue and Janesville Road will again sponsor a Pet Fair on Saturday, September 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Last year's event was such a success and drew such interest from other vendors that organizer Chris March, a manager at Walgreen's, said this year's event promises to be even bigger. "We started by offering pet photos, and felt we should have something for people to do while they were waiting, so we invited HAWS (Humane Animal Welfare Society) to come out as well as other pet related businesses, and it was really well-received," March said. "This year, we have so many others joining in and we are expecting it to be much more expanded." Proceeds from the sale of photos and other fundraisers during the …

The Food Pantry Goes Back to School

While many of their backpacks are filled, demand still exceeds supply.

As long as retailers are making it ridiculously cheap to stock up on some of the basics for school (there's always 10 cent notebooks somewhere), the Muskego Food Pantry is hoping you'll remember to grab a few extra items for kids in need. Julie Frahman, director of the pantry, said they will distribute the filled backpacks at their annual Back to School Bonanza on August 19, but before then they have to make sure everyone who needs one, gets one. "We've been fortunate to get backpacks from the Backpack Coalition, but there are still 10-12 families who we need to take care of," Frahman said. The list of supplies needed to fill a backpack aren't too different from what you'd put in your own kids, and include: Frahman said too much is also …

Summer Leaves Pantry Shelves Empty, So Leaves Floral Hopes to Fill Them

Mason jar class is being held on Sunday, June 29 at local florist, which hopes to provide more food for the Muskego Food Pantry and alleviate their drought

Did you know that a simple mason jar can be made into a beautiful vase or centerpiece? A "Bring Your Own Mason Jar" Floral Design Workshop on Sunday July 29 at 1 p.m. will help you transform this simple item into a fresh floral arrangement you can enjoy, all while serving the need for food locally. Leaves Floral Design is putting on the workshop, which is $10 per person or $8 when you bring five non-perishable food items for the Muskego Food Pantry. The idea for the class isn't a new one, as Leaves has offered them since they opened in spring, but the food drive is. "The pantry does so much for people who need help in the summer when kids are off of school and all year long," said owner Jamie Foshey. "I've been wanting to help them over …

Road to Jammin, and to End Hunger, Begins in Franklin

'Biking for Hunger' invites cyclists to head west to help raise awareness of hunger in the city, as well as dollars and donations to the Muskego Food Pantry.

Jammin' on Janesville will no doubt draw a nice crowd again, and if you're worried about parking, why not bike it? In fact, while you're biking, why not join a group that will be gathering at St. Martin of Tours in Franklin to make a statement about the featured nonprofit, Muskego Food Pantry? Rodger Runyan is organizing a 'Biking for Hunger' event that will begin at the church's parking lot in Franklin, 7963 S 116th St., which also is next to the recreation trail. "We realize with the heat it may be tough for some people to bring food with them, in a backpack or otherwise, but we are also encouraging people to bring a monetary donation, which is a lot easier to carry," Runyan said. Any cyclists interested in making the 4.7-mile trek to …

A Hot Time at July Jammin'

Remember being chilly at June's Jammin' on Janesville? Well, you won't have to worry about that for July's edition of Muskego's street party.

As the sun set on June's Jammin' on Janesville, it was good to have a coat on. That memory will be easily wiped away at the July 6 Jammin', as temps at the start of the festival will be into the 90s. Muskego Patch will be in attendance along with about 85 other local businesses - visit us just across from Muskego Elementary School at DeWinter Eye Care! So, what's new at the July Jammin? Muskego Food Pantry will be the festivals nonprofit beneficiary, sponsored by Sandoval Dental care. Food needs soar into the summer, as kids who normally receive reduced cost lunches are home and the need increases, so look for them at Lincoln Point (College Avenue and Janesville Road) and help them to fill a truck with nonperishable food items. Volunteers Sought in Muskego and Throughout County

Local opportunities exist to help seniors and little kids; give back to the Waukesha County community as a historic gardener, adult companion and more.

Summer's here and it's likely the kids are bored already. Depending on their age, they can be put to good use helping out the community. In Muskego Acres of Hope and Aspirations is always looking for extra hands to help with the care of its 'creatures of rehab' and basic upkeep around the five-acre property. Contact the facility at 414-422-4882. Teens are being sought to help out the younger set at the annual Safety City program in July. The classes teach youngsters bike safety and safety around the house, and teens help with 'coralling' the students to ensure the classes run smoothly. Contact Gary Mrotek at the Muskego Police Department with your interest by emailing gmrotek@ci.muskego.wi.us. As always, the Muskego Food Pantry fills a …

Paul Ryan Pushes 'Path to Prosperity' To Friendly Crowd in Muskego

Ryan warned of a looming debt crisis and fielded a question about cuts to food stamps and welfare reform.

Though his brainchild "Path to Prosperity" budget proposal failed to pass Congress, Wisconsin’s 1st District Congressman Paul Ryan used those words as a headline for his presentation Thursday in Muskego, speaking with a fresh urgency about reducing U.S. debt. The message seemed to resonate with the crowd of more than 100 people at Muskego's High Tide. “He’s been bold and brave enough to stand up for several years,” Bill Kuter, who came from West Allis, said of Ryan. “If you keep knocking on the door, someone’s listening, and someone’s going to answer.” Ryan spoke for about fifteen minutes about the threat of debt crisis and his ideas to reduce government regulations and spending, before fielding questions from a favorable audience at the …

PHOTOS: Volunteers Brave Lousy Day to Make a Difference

Despite cold and rainy conditions, many Muskego groups come out to help out; food pantry a big winner in the efforts.

No doubt, Saturday wouldn't have been anyone's dream day to spend outside. Temps hovering in the low 40s and an off-and-on drizzle made for - let's face it - lousy conditions. However, volunteers associated with many Muskego nonprofit organizations and citizens groups made the best of it, and from most reports, results were successful. The Muskego Food Pantry got a fair share of attention from two food drives. The Bay Lane PTO and student council were stationed in front of Pick n Save to "stuff the bus." Staff from the school said there had already been 1,700 items collected at the school, and donations were steady throughout the morning.  Further up the road, Walmart was the site to "stuff the truck" with volunteers from the VFW Post 8171…
