History To Be Told, One Tavern at a Time

Historic Muskego pub crawl is more about the buildings than the beer, which could be why it's now sold out.

Gary Kulas is a Muskego resident, lover of history and certified tour guide, so the Historic Muskego Pub Crawl is right in his wheelhouse. "I've done walking tours in Milwaukee, bus tours and I'm excited to tell the history of Muskego's various establishments throughout the years," Kulas said. The pub crawl is scheduled for March 16, but has sold out about a week ahead of time, and Kulas said it's not so much the beverages as the buildings that are attracting people. "So far I can see that this is developing into something other than your typical pub crawl," he explained. "It seems to be appealing to a wide mix of interests, including City Hall employees, former bar owners, other historians, some folks with experience hash marks on their …

Chances are, based on the reasons people are interested, and what we've mentioned in the article, the emphasis is more on the history. This won't be like a Walker's Point pub crawl by any stretch, nor is it the only pub crawl in the area.   more ›

PHOTOS: Muskego Historical Society Craft Fair

Cold and blustery weather kept crowds down but the crafters kept spirits up with seasonal gifts, food and decor

The 6th Annual Muskego Historical Society craft fair was held on Saturday, and most folks who were there - crafters and customers alike - were bundled up against unseasonably cool weather. However, dozens of crafters were on hand selling handmade decor, clothing, wood work and hot food and beverages made it worth the time spent outdoors. The event was held at the Old Settlement Centre, with proceeds helping to fund the Muskego Historical Society. Many of the historic buildings were also open to the public for the event.

Historical Society is Set for Craft Fair

A great response from vendors has meant just a few outdoor spots remain available, but also means that fair goers have plenty to see, eat and do Sept. 22.

Last year's annual craft fair at the Muskego Old Settlement Centre was rainy, but kept crowds coming anyway, and with a chilly but sunny forecast, planners are excited to return this year with a bigger event. Laura Mishefske, a member of the Muskego Historical Society which organizes the event, says they are expecting more than 50 crafters to sell their wares, inside and out, rain or shine. "We have everything from pottery, textiles, floral, greeting cards and wood crafts spread throughout the grounds," she said. In addition, grill food will be served up along with Sweet Delights Kettle Corn and an old fashioned bake sale for the perpetually hungry. Tractor driven hay rides will also be offered around the grounds, and kids can enjoy …

A Piece of Muskego's Past for $2.2 Million

Historic carousel that charmed thousands over the decades at Dandilion Park has traveled extensively since it left the city in the 1970s, but the restored ride is being marketed for sale in the area it came from.

Dan Horenberger worked at the House in the Rock back in the 1970s, around the same time that Dandilion Park was seeing its demise. He maintained the site's iconic carousel there, and eventually put his interest into restoration of the machines that are as much art pieces as they are amusements. Ironic then that Horenberger is now helping the seller of the 1905 Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) model that stood on the grounds in Muskego to return it to the same area. "If we can't find a home for it in Muskego, we are also looking to see if Bay Beach (in Green Bay) would be interested in adding to their park, as they don't presently have a carousel," he said. While it would be wonderful to see it return to the city, the Historical Society …

There has been discussion that they are going to develop the old Muskego Beach and make it into a community attraction. What a wonderful centerpiece this would make and a great story that any news station and/or newspaper would love to pick up. "Muskego Beach to bring back the past including 100+ year old carousel". If the developers of this new property on Little Muskego Lake could get behind …   more ›

Lake Park Committee Gets the Green Light; Land Purchase Will Wait

Officials hope delay of purchase of Little Muskego Lake property and creation of new committee will address public's need for costs on proposed park development

Extra time to consider citizens' input on what should go into a park on the lake: Check. Exploration of costs based on that input: Check. The ability for the Common Council to reverse an earlier decision to buy the property should it decide buying the park land is not in the best interest of the city: Check. Addressing the concerns of many residents regarding the city's proposed purchase of a 4.6-acre parcel on Little Muskego Lake, aldermen voted 5-2 Tuesday night to approve a resolution that puts the next step into the hands of the Parks and Recreation Board. The resolution calls for the creation of a subcommittee of the parks board that will study the issue, gather cost estimates and public input, and come back to the Common Council with…

The Anti-Alinsky

10:23 pm on Friday, March 16, 2012

The city spends spend hundreds (possibly thousands) of dollars to make sure they are doing things legally. No competent attorney is going to give advice that is going to partial and lopsided enough to "back the alderman into a corner". As usually you use histrionics to try to overstate a weak argument. More than three alderman represent the city of Muskego. Like the whiners that camped out at the…   more ›
