Zoning Changes A Sign of the Times

Residents on Muskego farms are not likely to qualify under new regulations, so the plan commission opts to abandon exclusive agricultural zoning, marking further departure in the city's image from its rural roots.

Many residents who have lived in Muskego long enough know that its image of a quiet bedroom community with a distinct rural nature has been changing in recent years. Tuesday night's Plan Commission meeting underscored that in an equally subtle way, as the commission discussed what to do with exclusive agricultural (EA) zoning. Generally, farming homesteads have qualified for EA zoning, which allowed them to get state agricultural preservation tax credits. However, as property owners have wanted to sell off portions of their land, many have opted for A-1 (agricultural) zoning, which allows them to do so, and also keeps them as "conforming." City Planner Jeff Muenkel explained that very few residents were interested any more in the EA zoning…

Meeting Preview: Plan Commission Attempts to Finish Business with New Kohl's Design

A lengthy agenda features many annual reviews, return of seasonal businesses and the proposed Kohl's facade redesign.

The Muskego Plan Commission will meet Tuesday night to catch up on old business that had to be put on hold, as January's meeting was canceled when there weren't enough commissioners on hand. The commission meets at 6 p.m. in the Muskego Room on the lower level of City Hall and will include the following issues: To review the complete agenda, click here.

UPDATE Meeting Preview: Muskego Plan Commission Revisits Kohl's Design

Previous review of plans to update facade were turned down to have the retailer present a more compatible prairie style to suit the commerce area

Please note the Plan Commission Meeting was canceled as there were not enough members for a quorum. As soon as the meeting is rescheduled we will share that information. The Plan Commission will meet at City Hall Tuesday evening at 6pm, with the following items on the agenda: Kohl's Department Stores will present a revised plan to update its facade to the commission. Previously, renderings presented in December got mixed reviews, with most of the commission feeling that the style was too contemporary and didn't match the architectural plan for the area of a prairie style. While Kohl's said they couldn't completely revamp plans, there were some things that could be considered to more closely match what the city is looking for. Renovations …

Seems that these clinics draw people, and the space between Aurora and Kohl's is still slated for development, providing a nice 'sandwich' to attract retailers seeking traffic.   more ›

Muskego Plan Commission OKs Rezoning on Borst, Lalicata Sites

Another piece of the puzzle is placed for purchase of Borst property, and Lalicata rezoning raises some concern about expansion

The Muskego Plan Commission approved the rezoning of the environmentally significant land owned by Nancy Borst, who is looking to sell much of the land to the city. The redesignation of portions of the land to Conservation for the city's portion, and residential country estates for the portions that Borst is retaining mark another point of progress in the purchase of the land. The portions the city is purchasing involve a 46.2 acre parcel on the southern half, and another 57 acre piece to the north. The property is vital to the Little Muskego watershed, and will be developed as a 'passive park' area with hiking trails but no recreational structures built. The land is located to the west of Racine Avenue, off of Field Drive. The commission …

Meeting Preview: Plan Commission Will View New Building at Boxhorn Gun Club

The club is proposing a 5-stand clay range building to improve on its facilities.

The Muskego Plan Commission will meet Tuesday night at City Hall at 6pm and an approval for a building at the Boxhorn Gun Club is among the items on a relatively short agenda. Recently, the Common Council voted to enter into a purchase process (resolution of necessity), for the launch, which the owner Art Dumke was said to be excited about as he had plans to take proceeds of the sale to reinvest in improvements to the gun club. The building "is to provide a comfortable waiting/viewing area, an extremely safe shooting layout, and additional storage for the Boxhorn Gun Club," according to the proposal. The Club provides National Sport Clay Association (NSCA) 5-stand sporting events, and the proposed building will aid in these events. The …

Muskego Could Be Home to New Medical Clinic

Planning Commission approves construction of facility adjacent to Kohl's, with hopes that will spur additional development.

The building, site and operation plan for a 25,000 square foot medical building was approved Tuesday night during the Plan Commission meeting at City Hall. The building's architecture relative to what the current design plans are for that corridor were the main topic, as Kohl's does not feature 'prairie-style' components on its exterior.  An additional 64,000 square foot building footprint would eventually connect the medical facility with Kohl's to fill in the gap, and planners want to ensure the visual effect looks cohesive. Adam Trzebiatowski, planner with the City of Muskego, said that Kohl's may already be looking at exterior renovations for its locations and the city can address its requirements with them at that time. Should the …

Muskego Plan Commission Gives Walmart High Marks In Its Review

Retailer drew no negative comments for noise and no further reviews are planned.

Turns out Walmart is not so bad.  Three years ago the local group "Muskego First" created a furor over plans to build the store in the city. The proposal was approved and the store coasted through it's one-year review on Tuesday night.  No residents came out to weigh in on how the retailer has done in the past year and only one sent a letter to comment. That letter? It said there have been no problems with the big-box retailer. Adam Trzebiatowski with the city's planning department said the city's review focused on delivery routes, decibel levels and 24-hour operations. No problems were found.  Alderman Kert Harenda had also planned to go door to door as well to ask residents in his district if there were any problems. Harenda was not …

Meeting Preview: Plan Commission Reviews Walmart, and A New Medical Clinic to Move in Next to Kohl's

Annual review results discussed on the retailer, with a building, site and operation plan for a new medical clinic also on the agenda.

Walmart will have had its doors opened in Muskego for a year now, and with that a review of how good a neighbor its been will be discussed at the Plan Commission meeting at Muskego City Hall Tuesday night at 6pm. In addition, a building, site and operation plan will be reviewed by the commission for a 25,000 square foot medical building, which will be constructed to the west of Kohl's on the east side of Moorland Road. Briohn Building Corporation is requesting the plans to be approved, and is not revealing the name of the eventual tenant.  However, renderings bear a resemblance to many Aurora clinics, including one in New Berlin and the Lakeside Clinic in Muskego. A Pro Health Care Clinic is located on Janesville Road, less than a quarter …
