Fore! Ice Golf Takes the Edge out of Winter

Water Bugs sponsor another event on the lake, this time when the water's solid, and by all accounts, it looks like a lot of fun.

Golfing purists may turn up their nose to using hockey sticks in place of golf clubs and racquet balls in place of golf balls, but then again, they've never played on 'greens' like this. The area of Schrubing Bay on Little Muskego Lake provided the layout for about 4 of the 13 hole course for the 5th annual Charity Ice Golf Classic. With recent snowfall providing the perfect material to create the course, and food-colored snow designated each hole. The event was a fundraiser for the ski club, which performs from May until the end of August at Idle Isle Park as well as throughout the state in tournaments.

Muskego Waterskier Climbs into the Record Books

Against seemingly impossible odds, skiers from the U.S., including Muskego Water Bug Shelly Wohler, join together in China to set a record with Guinness

Skiers Reach New Heights in China

Water Bug Shelly Wohler shares a world record with other skiers from U.S. and China as they break Guiness Record for number of skiers in a pyramid.

The logistics could make your head hurt. Gather 44 people together, including three boat drivers, to trek thousands of miles across the ocean, bring miles of ski rope, skis and other miscellaneous equipment into China and through customs. Include the ski boat itself as part of the miscellaneous equipment, and there's so much that can go awry on the way to a world record-setting feat on the Yihe River in Linyi China. However, Shelly Wohler, a member of the Muskego Water Bugs joined the group, which included members of Janesville's Rock Aqua Jays and 15 Chinese waterskiers, in September. The goal: set the record for the most skiers in a pyramid. Wohler said planning for the trip began likely in January, and she was invited under cover of …

Water Bugs 'Make History,' 5-High

A towering pyramid is tough to accomplish for ski teams, and the Muskego Water Bugs reached for the sky, with success.

Allison Planton, vice president of the Muskego Water Bugs show ski team, called it 'history making.' "With effort from 24 of our skiing members, one driver, two spotters, the pick up boat crew, and at least five camera people we were able to put up this huge pyramid," Planton said. As impressive as a four-tier pyramid is during their weekly shows, the team was able to climb even further, adding another 'layer' to the exhibition. "This pyramid has been a dream of ours for the past year. We spent countless hours in the gym over the winter practicing and we are very excited to say we accomplished this history making pyramid for the team," Planton explained. The pyramid, which relies heavily on ideal water and wind conditions and an …

Week in Review: July 21-27

A local pub gets a second chance, and local connections lead us to state and national competitions.

July 23 Normally polls don't make the week in review, but the comments generated from a question on when people convicted of multiple OWI's should get prison time was off the charts - join the discussion! POLL: When Should OWI Offenders Receive a Felony Charge? July 24 Without a doubt, the hottest local topic this week was DJ's Pub and their request for rezoning. Tuesday night's council meeting showed a change of heart. DJ's Rezoning Passes, Painfully, on Second Look The Olympics are officially here: Meet Your Wisconsin Olympians July 25 We heard about the Ride for Stacy a Success at Danny Haskell's, and news of a local teen who's heading to compete for a state title: Muskego Teen Will Compete at State Level for American Miss Pageant July …

Water Bugs Shine at State, Hope for Nationals

Muskego's show ski team performs at state meet in Wisconsin, placing 6th and raising hopes for a national berth.

Performing every Wednesday night for Muskego audiences, the Water Bugs took their show on the road to Wisconsin Rapids this past weekend, and overall placed sixth of 14 Wisconsin teams in Division 1 for the National Ski Federation. Spokesperson Allison Planton said the placement puts the team in a great position to qualify for national competition August 10 - 12 in Janesville. Planton's brother Craig was named the tournaments most valuable male skier, earning the Jack Lukes award. The pairs team of Meghan Moriarty and Marty Campbell were awarded first place, which is not the first time the pair has taken the trophy but is impressive given that they have not performed together for the past two seasons. In addition the jump team took 3rd …

Muskego's Fourth of July Sets Up on the 3rd

The annual lakefront celebration at Idle Isle Park goes on July 3 even with the holiday falling in the middle of a work week; dry conditions will not affect fireworks set off on the lake.

Most residents in the city know that Muskego celebrates the Fourth of July a little early, and even though Tuesday is often a workday for most, the show will go on beginning at 1 p.m. on July 3 at Idle Isle Park. As usual, the park provides swimming and picnicking, but events will also include inflatable rides, a bungee run and a rock climbing wall in the green space. IIsland Ice Cream will be serving up its frozen goodies at noon, and the  Water Bugs will open its concession stand about 1 p.m. Ski Show times: Around 6:30 p.m., the junior members of the Water Bugs (from age 6) will take to the water for a preliminary ski show. The regular team will begin their show around 7:30 p.m. The 2012 Muskego Water Bugs show is themed "Once Upon a …

We've been inquiring, and it looks like it's a combination of the long range forecast, the fire department and DNR. We ran a piece last week, which has Muskego holding off for now. I'm hoping to get an answer tonight at the various meetings, especially as our conservation coordinator will be there. It may be a game day decision as no one wants to pull the plug too early. Stay tuned.   more ›

Recap: Common Council Marathon Includes Update on Borst Property

Borst property will hopefully close on Friday after several delays

With a full slate of issues from an aldermanic appointment to several closed session items, the Common Council came back from a closed session more than two and a half hours into their meeting Tuesday night to discuss an update on a purchase of a large parcel of land on the north side of the city. The purchase of a nearly 100-acre parcel owned by Nancy Borst is hoped to close on Friday, after several delays have reset the clock. Mayor Kathy Chiaverotti explained that the revisions in the agreement, including additional land that the Borst family would retain, had delayed the finalization of the sale. The result was a lower cost to the city by $30,000, however anticipated funding by the DNR for the land, which is considered environmentally …
