Tougher Reading, Math Standards Mean Lower Test Scores in Muskego-Norway

Despite changes in benchmarks for Wisconsin statewide reading and math tests, Muskego-Norway students continue to perform significantly higher than the statewide norms.

Use Patch's interactive database to see the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examinations scores in Elmbrook and other area districts for the last three years. Students in the Muskego-Norway School District saw lower scores in statewide math and reading tests this year, but those changes are almost entirely due to tough new standards that kicked in this year. In Muskego-Norway, 44.7 percent of the students who took the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examinations in November 2012 scored at proficient or advanced in reading. That's compared to 91.9 percent who hit that mark in 2011. The 2012-13 results were released last week. In math, 64 percent of the Muskego-Norway students were proficient or better this year, compared to 90 percent …

Student-Staff Ratios at Muskego-Norway Schools and How They Compare

See how the number of students per staff member in the Muskego-Norway district stacks up against nearby districts and the state.

One thing that always comes up when districts talk about laying off staff, is the student-staff ratio. In general, according to the non-profit group Class Size Matters, a lower ratio is considered good, providing for smaller class sizes and giving students more opportunity for attention from teachers.  There were 870,470 students enrolled in Wisconsin public and charter school in the 2011-12 school year. employing the 3,497 administrators, 31,532 aides and support staff, and 65,446 licensed staff members. (All employment numbers are full-time equivalents, meaning two half-time staff members would count as one.) Average staff-student ratios are as follows: 249 students per administrator, 28 students per aide/support staff, and 13 students …

Remember when the referendum was to remodel the high school? MNSD promised it would be able to keep class sizes below 30 per class. And is it any suprise MNSD has a sufficient amount of administrators but not teachers and aides? An easy way to keep their salaries up may be to reduce the front line people dealing with the kids.   more ›

Muskego Schools Assure They're Ready for Threats After Recent Lockdown

Superintendent Kelly Thompson says she knows the word 'lockdown' sounds scary, but during a recent incident, the goal is security and protection in any circumstance

After a brief lockdown at Muskego High School sent a mild panic among school parents on March 5, Muskego-Norway School Superintendent Kelly Thompson said the process was what schools are trained for, and kept students safe. "We knew fairly early on that it was not a threat to the student body directly, however we needed to control what was going on inside the school as the information we were receiving evolved," Thompson explained. A student who had been out of the school at that time was being sought and there were concerns that he may have been a danger, and Thompson said the reaction of the district along with the Muskego Police Department was to control the threat. "Our job at that point is to keep kids in as safe and protected a …

As a parent of an MHS student I would find it an inconvenience if I had found out that say the lunch room ran out of milk not that a person was on the way there with a weapon. If the same situation happened at the district offices the national Guard would have been called out and the press releases and conferences would have been endless.   more ›

Dennis Bussen to Retire from District

Former MHS Principal and Assistant Superintendent will step down at the end of June, citing family reasons for his departure.

After taking the second-in-command position at the Muskego-Norway School District in July 2012, Dr. Dennis Bussen announced his retirement at the school board meeting Monday night. The announcement came more as a board action to accept his resignation, and Bussen did not make a statement at that time. However, he told Muskego Patch afterward, "I had been thinking about retiring for some time lately. I would like to spend more time with my four grandchildren, wife and family." "There are also some personal family reasons that have influenced my decision. The students, parents, staff and Muskego-Norway community have been outstanding to work with during my 12 years of service. I feel extremely fortunate to have been given the opportunity to …
