Networking takes on a different spin, if you'll pardon the pun, but the Muskego Chamber's Young Professionals group hopes to draw interest for up and coming entrepreneurs
The best and brightest in Muskego's business climate are often some of its youngest, so the Muskego Chamber of Commerce has created a "satellite" group called Muskego's Young Professionals. The group's first event will be held at Alpine Lanes on Wednesday, May 1 at 5:30 p.m. and the $15 per person cost includes two games of bowling, "network bowling," and pizza. However, the casual environment doesn't detract from the intent of the group to connect those in their 20s and 30s to build their careers as well as their connections. "We are really excited to launch this group. Young professionals are our future business leaders and our source of economic development in our community. This group has our mission and vision in mind: Making our …

I have had the privilege of meeting many of you; whether it was a brief conversation, or an ongoing observation over the course of the year, these are my picks for those people who made things happen in Muskego.
I'm humbled whenever I consider the position I have. I get to tell your stories, whether it's crime, fire, personal triumph, or even just a fun weekend activity that brings a smile to kids' faces. This is not a scientific list, nor indicative of how well I may have gotten to know people personally; it's just my observation of who always seemed to 'be there' when something was happening in the community. There is also no meaning to the order, so don't read into it. 1. Suzi Link - folks either love her or hate her, but I have to admit she shows up. A lot of long Common Council meetings during much of the year would have worn others out, but Link has been a perennial presence to argue her point and to make sure the aldermen take the public …

Muskego joins 200 other cities across the country that show off their communities beautifully with color.
Muskego has been selected among thousands of entries to be in the running for the "Prettiest Painted Places in America." Sponsored by the Paint Quality Institute, the “Prettiest Painted Places” competition has also drawn six other entries from Wisconsin: Ashland, Darlington, Elkhart Lake, Evansville, Village of Hartland and Mount Horeb. Over the next few weeks, Muskego will vie with nearly 200 nominees from other states for regional and national honors, as judges with expertise in color selection, exterior painting, and home improvement review the entries, conduct additional research and make selected site visits. Finalists will be announced in late September, and the nation’s 12 "Prettiest Painted Places" will be revealed in mid-…

Aldermen say the popular senior program has merit, but the summer street festival can do with less funding
The Muskego Senior Taxi will continue to receive funding from the city in 2013 at the same level it has in past years, but Jammin' on Janesville will likely face a cut. Meetings at the Committee of the Whole Tuesday, aldermen asked questions of representatives from the taxi service, which provides low-cost rides for Muskego seniors, to determine if they would continue to approve a $5,000 request for funding in 2013. The organization started about six years ago and has received city funds every year since. At issue was not whether the program was a benefit to the city, but rather how the city should categorize funding for this and other community organizations and services. "There are a lot of other organizations that would appreciate the …

With the Muskego Performing Arts Council as its nonprofit focus, August's Jammin' on Janesville celebrates the arts in music and song.
Organizers have noted in spite of cooler temperatures in June and the sizzling temperatures in July, each event for Jammin' on Janesville has grown in offerings and attendance. With perhaps the best weather of all three events forecast for Friday, August 3, the seasonal street party continues building Muskego’s new tradition of combining business with pleasure, according to the Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. “Our original intention of this event was to help the businesses located on Janesville Road endure challenges faced in the midst of the construction. Since then, I’d say this event has quickly morphed into one of the area’s largest, most attended gatherings of the year, with businesses and residents coming together for…

Planning for its second year, Jammin organizers are seeing an enthusiastic response to the summer event.
It would have been a fair assessment to say that last year, the concept of a festival held along Janesville Road was a tough sell for some businesses. The road, which is poised for a major reconstruction, is not necessarily the prettiest thing Muskego has going for it. However, that was the point of staging events to draw crowds - and customers - to meet the businesses that would be impacted by road construction, and the success of 2011's events has led to a heightened interest in this year's planning. "Muskego businesses are putting the pedal to the medal for Jammin’ on Janesville. As Muskego Chamber of Commerce’s largest event of the year, businesses are hopping on the marketing bandwagon to promote themselves while creating a lively …

First-time event will be sponsored by Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber of Commerce has announced that there will be a 'State of the City' address given by Mayor Kathy Chiaverotti on Monday, March 19 at 7:30 a.m. at the Muskego Public Library. The timing is hoped to allow people to attend before work, and will feature breakfast for $8 per person. Tina Weiss, executive director of the Muskego Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, explained that the event, which is being held for the first time for the city, will allow for questions as well from the audience. She said it helps to serve the Chamber's goals of providing education and information to the community and their members as well. The concept was created with the mayor, Weiss explained, and will also include a presentation on the Janesville …

Young's Auto celebrates a belated groundbreaking in Muskego's downtown, continuing 33 years of service.
Donald Young got a little emotional in thanking the business community and the city for its help in making a new auto collision repair shop a reality. He spoke as the Chamber of Commerce and other partners came out to celebrate a groundbreaking ceremony for a new Young's Auto on Friday afternoon. "I couldn't have done it without all of your help," he said. The current shop, which was estimated to have been built around 1922, is going to be torn down as Janesville Road is widened, which was a little bittersweet for Mayor Kathy Chiaverotti, who was on hand to congratulate Young. "I hate to see an old building be torn down, but it is a sign of progress, and we're happy to help out Young's with getting a new building," she said. The structure …

Afternoon talk host makes Muskego organization a target after learning that executive director signed a Walker recall petition. Was it that slow of a news day?
Apparently someone has it in for the Chamber of Commerce in Muskego. Otherwise it escapes me why someone would take the time to comb through Walker recall signatures to tell radio host Mark Belling, who occupies a chair at the WISN 1130 studios from 3 to 6 p.m., to tattle on Executive Director Tina Weiss. Apparently, Weiss signed a recall petition around the time she was hired on at the Chamber of Commerce last year. Oh, the horror. His point was that the chamber is a conservative, pro-business organization, and Weiss' action of signing a petition to recall Walker is in direct opposition to promoting business growth. Belling's rant, in which he called Weiss a "crybaby weinie lefty" also included several "stupids" when referring to Weiss. …

Denise - That always confuses me too! I understand that all of us have very full plates. Fortunately, not all issues strike a chord for each Muskego resident. For the issues that do get our respective hearts pumping, however, we have to make the effort to state our opinions in the appropriate setting to have a constructive impact. (I realize that standing up in front of a group is intimidating …   more ›
