The number ends four years with fewer than 600 annual traffic deaths, and represents a 6 percent increase over 2011.
More people died on Wisconsin roads in 2012 than in any of the previous four years, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT)reported this week. The state closed out 2012 with 601 traffic deaths, 36 more than 2011 and two more than the previous five-year average. The tally also ended the state's run of four consecutive years with fewer than 600 traffic deaths. Before the 2008-2011 period, the last time the state had traffic death numbers that low was from 1924-1927, WisDOT reported. The traffic fatalities total for last year included 101 motorcycle drivers, 13 motorcycle passengers, 44 pedestrians and 10 bicyclists. One of those cyclists was killed on Woods Road in Muskego in July, with the investigation still pending. Another …

Despite seasonably warm temps this week, you know it's coming: snow, sleet and the need to have the snowplows dispatched to clear your street, so hats off to the drivers, says WisDOT and the Governor
Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed Monday, November 19 as Snowplow Driver Appreciation Day in Wisconsin to acknowledge "their steadfast efforts to make roadways safer and keep traffic moving before, during and after winter storms" according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). The proclamation also encourages motorists to exercise caution whenever they encounter snowplows and to limit their driving during severe storms to avoid becoming stuck or stalled in their vehicle, which slows down snow removal efforts. Public Works Director for Muskego, Dave Simpson, said the city is responsible for clearing 147 miles of roadway, and that's not including those roadways that the county or state take care of. So, Janesville Road, …

The following release comes from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation: Traffic crashes kill more teenagers in Wisconsin and the rest of the nation than any other cause of death. Last year, 53 teenagers were killed and nearly 6,300 were injured in traffic crashes in Wisconsin, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). To help prevent deaths and injuries among teenage motorists by encouraging better decision making and safety conscious behavior behind the wheel, Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed the week of October 14 to 20 as Teen Driver Safety Week in Wisconsin. More than 18,000 car-deer crashes were recorded last year, with Waukesha County coming in 3rd; October and November are their most active time of year, so here's how to avoid being a statistic.
Mechanics love this time of year. Each fall, body shops and automotive repair businesses are in great demand as the deer crash season peaks. October and November are the mating season for deer, which makes them more active especially at dusk and dawn when they move back and forth between their bedding and feeding areas. As they roam, deer often will dart unexpectedly into the path of vehicles, and drivers likely will confront the panicky “deer in the headlights” predicament, according to a release from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT). So keep your eyes open and your reflexes quick in order to avoid the darting animals, and a big repair bill. Last year, Wisconsin law enforcement agencies reported a total of 18,176 deer …

It's a political season, and while signs touting your favorite candidate may be patriotic, if they're in the right of way, they're also illegal
With a host of national, state and local elections set for this fall, campaign signs are an increasingly common sight, so the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) is reminding candidates, campaign workers and the general public that state law prohibits the placement of any type of sign – including political, commercial or garage sale signs – on highway right-of-way. “This is not a political issue, this is a matter of public safety,” said Allan Johnson with WisDOT’s Bureau of Highway Maintenance. He pointed out the improperly placed signs are a distraction and an obstruction for motorists, and could pose a safety risk for people entering highways. Long after the polls are closed, the signs also deteriorate leaving only the wire …

Interesting that based on the statistics given that we still don't have a helmet law in this state. As crazy as we are with the Click it or Ticket campaigns, we just completely ignore that other safety device. Just something really hypocritical about that in my eyes. But that's the norm in this state in regards to bikes,. And for the record I'm against both being laws.   more ›
