Muskego Residents Remain a Target of Bold Scammers

Giving personal information about family members, even posing as them, scammers continue to target Muskego residents and their money

Muskego Police continue to hear from elderly residents about scammers who are using personal information about family members in order to collect "bail money" from them. Muskego Patch had reported on a series of incidents about two weeks ago, but it appears that the scammers are continuing to target the Muskego area. On April 27, a Muskego resident reported being the victim of a scam to police, after receiving a phone call from his “grandson” who claimed to be under arrest after getting in an accident and needed money wired to Lebanon. Characteristic of how the scam operates, the resident reported that his “grandson” knew enough personal information to convince him that the call was legitimate. Desperate Call from 'Grandson' Leaves Muskego Man $2,600 Poorer

There's a new scam every week it seems, and this one has suspects calling back victim for more money.

Muskego police were contacted by a 79-year-old man who said he was the victim of a phone scam that used family ties in desperate situations to bilk him out of $2,600. According to police reports, the man was contacted by someone identifying himself as the man's 18-year-old grandson on the morning of Oct. 29. He said he was arrested "for being American" while in Mexico attending the funeral of a friend. When the man questioned his grandson's voice, the suspect on the other end of the line replied that he had a bad cold. He asked the man for $2,600 to help release him from jail, which the man sent. By 3 p.m. the same day, a call came from someone identifying themselves as part of the American Embassy, saying the money had been received and …
